News: Wachovia Cup for Athletics Winners Announced by VHSL: Western Branch, Hidden Valley and Radford Win

Charlottesville (June 23, 2011) - Western Branch, Hidden Valley and Radford claim the top spots in VHSL athletic competition for the 2010-11 school year, winning the coveted Wachovia Cup for Group AAA, AA and A. In Group AAA, Western Branch won its first Cup title, while in Group AA Hidden Valley won for the second time, and in Group A Radford claimed its second straight Cup.

Loudoun had five AA schools finish in the top 20: Loudoun County (8th), Briar Woods (9th), Broad Run (11th), Potomac Falls (13th) and Woodgrove (tied 19th).

Charlottesville (May 18, 2011) - A traditional powerhouse school, another repeat winner and one newcomer claimed top honors in the 2010-11 Wachovia Cup race for year-long success. In Group A Madison County captured its 15th consecutive title, while Group AA Harrisonburg and Group AAA Westfield earned Cup titles. Locally, Loudoun County High School took fifth overall in Group AA.

Madison County now has 17 Cups earned over an 18-year period, while Harrisonburg claimed its first title. Westfield returned to the top spot for the second straight year and won its third Cup in five years.

First awarded in 1990, the Wachovia Cup represents 22 years of excellence. Six cups are presented, one for academic activities and one for athletics in each of VHSL’s three enrollment classifications. The winners for athletics will be announced in June, following the completion of spring championships.

Charlottesville (Dec. 16, 2009) - Radford, Blacksburg and Lake Braddock lead the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup standings in Group A, AA and AAA following the 2009 fall sports season. Locally, Stone Bridge is No. 4 in AAA with Loudoun Valley No. 5. In AA, Loudoun County is No. 5.

The Wachovia Cup recognizes the League’s state champions of state champions, the school in each group that performs best in state-level competition across all sports.
