News: Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Stone Bridge All Top 5 in Wachovia Cup Standings After Fall Season

Charlottesville (Dec. 16, 2009) - Radford, Blacksburg and Lake Braddock lead the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup standings in Group A, AA and AAA following the 2009 fall sports season. Locally, Stone Bridge is No. 4 in AAA with Loudoun Valley No. 5. In AA, Loudoun County is No. 5.

The Wachovia Cup recognizes the League’s state champions of state champions, the school in each group that performs best in state-level competition across all sports.


Radford, a two-time champion (2004 and 2008) is seeking its second cup in three years in Group A, while defending Group AA cup champion Blacksburg is making a bid for its third title in four years and its seventh cup overall. In Group AAA, Lake Braddock is going for its fifth cup overall and its first since 2005, while trying to snap Frank W. Cox’s four-year run at the top.

The winner of the cup, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events. Points are awarded for all sanctioned sports in the following manner: first place, 50; second place, 45; third place, 40; fourth place, 35; fifth place, 30; sixth place, 25; seventh place, 20; eighth place, 15. If there are fewer than eight schools from a classification in the event, only those schools which are represented are eligible to receive points.

In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of schools that tie and the number of schools that finish higher in the standings. For example, the volleyball quarterfinal losers equally divide the points for fifth through eighth place (22.5 points each), while semifinal losers split third and fourth place (37.5 points).

Schools that earn recognition in the Wachovia Sportsmanship program, determined following the completion of all competition for the year, receive 50 points each.

The fall standings reflect the following activities: golf, boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball, cheer, football (top eight schools in each of six divisions), and field hockey (Group AAA and unclassified for A and AA) and boys volleyball (Group AAA).

Radford scored 147.5 points to lead Strasburg (127.5) by 20 points in Group A. Radford’s lead comes on the basis of strong performances in boys and girls cross country (third place), a runner-up finish football and additional points in girls volleyball. Strasburg’s points come from second-place finishes in girls cross country and cheer, to go along with a semifinal berth in girls volleyball, while third place Clarke County (115 points) and Altavista (107.5) follow close behind. Clarke County claimed the boys cross country title and also scored points in girls cross country and cheer. Altavista earned points with a football championship, while earning additional points in boys cross country and girls volleyball. Appomattox County and Gate City (97.5 points) rounds out the top five, with Gate City winning the girls volleyball crown.

Blacksburg scored 140 points for a 10-point lead in Group AA over Western Albemarle at 130 points. Blacksburg took top honors in boys cross country to go along with second-place finishes in girls cross country and golf. Western Albemarle scored points in girls cross country, golf, girls volleyball and field hockey. Cave Spring (127.5 points) follows closely in third place picking up points in football, golf, girls volleyball and girls cross country. Grafton is in fourth place with 117.5 points on the strength of a state runner-up in girls volleyball to go along with points in field hockey and boys cross country. Loudoun County (100 points) holds down the fifth spot after earning points with a girls volleyball title along with points in girls cross country and golf.

Lake Braddock leads with 130 points in Group AAA on the strength of a state championship win in girls cross country to go along with a state runner-up in football and additional points in boys cross country. Four-time defending cup champion Frank W. Cox is in second place with 105 points with a state title in field hockey, while picking up additional points in girls volleyball and golf. Mountain View is in third place with 95 points from a state championship in boys cross country and a runner-up finish in field hockey. Stone Bridge (90 points), runners-up in both football and cheer, and Loudoun Valley (87.5), champions in girls volleyball, finish out the top five.

Winter standings will be announced after the basketball tournament in March, and the final 2009-10 results will be released in June after the spring championships have concluded.
