Boys Basketball: Briar Woods Beats AAA North Stafford to Take Tip-Off Tournament

(Dec. 15, 2009) - A week after it was supposed to be played, Briar Woods High School and North Stafford got together for the championship game of the Briar Woods Tip-Off Tournament with host Falcons, behind 31 by Myles Tate, taking the title with a 69-59 win over the previously unbeaten Wolverines.

After Fauquier took down Manassas Park in the consolation game, the stage was set for the 4-0 Wolverines of North Stafford and the 2-1 Briar Woods Falcons. North Stafford's Trejon Mcgee got the Wolverines off to a good start connected on his first two 3-point attempts as the Wolverines jumped out to a six point lead at the half.

Briar Woods was able to keep it close throughout the game, thanks to Curtis Calder's 10 points and Yves Kuoame's 11. BW senior Phil Hardy was a spark off the bench in the fourth quarter with six of his eight in the final period.

Falcon sophomore Tate also helped take over the fourth quarter with 16 of his 31 the last eight minutes of the game. The Falcons outscored North Stafford 29-12 in the 4th quarter.

Briar Woods will take on Potomac Falls tonight in Ashburn in AA Dulles District action.
