Boys Basketball: Holiday Tournament Round-up

(Dec. 30, 2009) - It was a busy night of holiday hoops Tuesday with eight of the 10 local boys teams in action. At the end of the night, four teams came away with victories -- Broad Run, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley and Park View.



Broad Run 64, Stone Bridge 49
The Spartans led this Leesburg Honda Holiday Tournament game at Broad Run High School from start to finish as for the second time this season BR held the high-octane Bulldog offense in check. Broad Run improves to 8-1 on the season and SB falls to 4-3.

Kevin McGaughey led all scorers with 16 and DaDa Johnson and Ali Janjua provided a spark inside for the Spartans, combining for 24 points. Ahmad Zafar scored 12 to give BR four players in double digits.

SB was led by Nik Brown with 15 and Richie Berry with 13.

Loudoun Valley 40, Dominion 33
The Vikes improved to 4-2 on the season by winning this low-scoring defensive affair in the Leesburg Honda Holiday Tournament at Broad Run High School.

Mike Hathaway and Kyle Kohnen each scored 10 for LV.

Dominion, a year after winning the Dulles District title and advancing to the AAA state quarterfinals, falls to 1-8 with an 0-6 mark vs. AAA size schools. DeAndre Reaves scored 10 for the Titans.

The Raiders reached .500 on the season (4-4 record) with a win in the Middletown Christmas Tournament.

LC's Calle brown had another double-double (12 points, 20 rebounds), while Colin Gibson had a game-high 19 points, and Worth Mays had 10 points and five steals. Mahir Mrkonjic added 17 for the Raiders.

The Patriots, host of their own holiday tournament, improved to 4-3 on the season with a win over the Highland Score Tuesday. Tim French and J.R. Shooks combined for 27 points to lead the Pats.

The Eagles led going into the final quarter in this game at the Bulldog Bash at Westfield High School but Flint Hill rallied for the victory. Freedom falls to 2-8 on the season.
