Gymnastics: Freedom Edges Loudoun County in 5-Team Meet; Raider Jessica Drews Shines

Sterling (Dec. 14, 2009) - For the second time this season, Freedom High School edged defending Dulles District champion Loudoun County, this time 123.1 to 119.8, in a five-team meet Monday night at Park View High School.

Loudoun County's Jessica Drews captured three of four events -- bars (8.8), beam (9.05) and floor (8.8) -- on her way to taking the All-Around with a 35.35. Teammate Danielle Scoggin was runner-up at 33.55

Alexis Chaet of Freedom scored 8.9 to win the vault and deny Drews a clean sweep as the Raider was second at 8.7. Chaet was third in the All-Around at 32.9. LC's Christina Thoppil scored 9.0 on the beam.

From Loudoun County:
The gymnastics team finished 2nd at a 5 team meet at Park View last night.

The Lady Raiders improved their team score by more than a point to 119.80

Leading the way for the Raiders were:

Sophomore Jess Drews who placed 2nd on vault, 1st on bars, 1st on beam, 1st on floor and 1st in the all around.

Sophomore Christina Thoppil placed 5th in the all around, 8th on floor, 8th on bars, 7th on vault and 2nd on beam.

Sophomore Layla Ghuzlan placed 16th on vault, improved her scores on beam and floor and contributed to the teams 2nd place finish.

Freshman Danielle Scoggin placed 4th on vault, 4th on bars, 3rd on beam, 2nd on floor and 2nd all around.

The team will next compete on Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational at Battlefield High School.

From Heritage:

Heritage gymnastics team placed 5th at meet on Monday night at Park View. The team accumulated 10 points more than their team total at last Thursday's meet.

Leading the way for the Pride were:

LE Lloyd who placed 19th on bars, 10 on beam, 15th on floor, 11th in the all around and 5th on vault.
Nina Pender placed 14th on floor, 14th on beam Shannon Grubbs placed 11th on beam, 13th on floor and12th on bars Kara Smith placed 10th on vault, 12th in the all around, 13th on bars, 16th on beam and 16th on floor.
Brittan Dyer placed 13th on vault
Alessa Fisher placed 19th on beam
Emily Hays placed 24th on floor

The team will next compete at the Bobcat Invitational at Battlefield H.S. on Saturday.
