Girls Basketball: Holiday Tournament Round-up

(Dec. 30, 2009) - It was a full night of holiday hoops action for area girls teams with Park View notching its first win of the season, Freedom remaining unbeaten and Broad Run and Stone Bridge winning games as well.



Freedom 65, Potomac 51
The Eagles improved to 7-0 on the season with Kelsey Buchanan scoring 14 points with 15 rebounds in this Bulldog Bash semifinal at Westfield High School.

Jasmine Merritt also scored 14 for Freedom while Jessica Escorza added 12 and Dionna Scott 11.

Edison 75, Loudoun County 61
A night after scoring 56 first half points, the AA Raiders struggled to score in the first half of their semifinal contest as they trailed AAA Edison Eagles by a score of 23-13.

The Eagles would extend their lead to 53-33 early in the fourth quarter before County's pressure and quick scoring cut the lead to 57-52.

However, North Carolina State recruit, senior point guard Myisha Goodwin, would connect on 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch as County lost by a score of 75-61.

Goodwin would finish with a game high 31 points. She also tallied eight rebounds and eight assists.

County which scored 48 second half points and was led by the fantastic shooting performance of junior shooting guard Brittany Batts. Batts finished with a team high 24 points. She would also finish with seven rebounds and five steals.

Alissa Kain finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while Kendra Holmes was the third Raider in double figures as she closed out the contest with 10 points. Holmes also had seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

County will play in the third/fourth place game on Wednesday at 4 p.m..

Park View celebrated its first victory of the season by winning in its own holiday tournament. Chloe Owens scored 19 points for Park View while Christina Sheppard added 12 for the Patriots (1-6).

Park View led 22-3 after the first quarter and 31-4 at the half.

The Bulldogs won their second straight game in the Leesburg Honda Holiday Tournament at Stone Bridge.

Cori Prince score two 3-pointers and 13 points for the Bulldogs and Sakai Williams added 10 points.

SB improves to 6-1 while LV falls to 3-3.
