Boys Soccer: Late First Half Goal Sends Stone Bridge to Regionals; Park View Takes Control of Dulles

(May 16, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School boys soccer team secured a trip to the Northern Region tournament with a 1-0 win over Thomas Jefferson Monday in a Liberty District tournament quarterfinal that was suspended at halftime due to lightning.

In Dulles District action, Tuscarora and Park View waited out the weather with their game in Sterling not starting until 9:30 p.m. and the Patriots defeated the Huskies, 3-1, to take a 2-point lead over Broad Run with one game left in the regular season. Both Broad Run (13-1-1) Park View (14-1-0) have Dominion left on their schedules. The Patriots will clinch the regular season title with a win over the Titans or can assure themselves of at least a co-championship with a tie.

While Tuscarora had several nice early chances, Park View took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on a goal by Geo Hernandez. Park View looked to take firm control just before half on a nice finish by Jose Miguel Herrera on a pinpoint pass from Franklin Castro.

The Huskies, however, struck in the final 10 seconds of the half on a incredible shot by Armando Garzon.

Park View added the insurance in the second half as Anson Rosenthal celebrated Senior Night with a goal.

In Ashburn, the Bulldogs goal came with less than 30 seconds to play in the first half as Michael Morningstar scored off a throw-in from Tommy Dunne. The game had to be suspended at half time as a storm moved into the Ashburn area. The officials waited until after 9 p.m. for the storms to pass but lighting was still being seen in and around the area so the game was suspended and according to the VHSL game rules considered an official game.

With the win the Bulldogs record now stands at 8-1-4 on the year -- the only loss was to TJ -- and Abe Yoslov picked up his 8th shutout on the season. The Bulldogs will wait until Tuesday for the results of the McLean and South Lakes game. The winner will play Stone Bridge at Fairfax HS at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18.

This marks the 7th year in a row that the Stone Bridge boy's team has qualified for their respective regional soccer tournament. Last year the Bulldogs won the Northern Region tournament.
