Softball: Stone Bridge Rallies in the 7th Only to End Season in Extra Innings Loss

(May 30, 3011) - The Stone Bridge High School softball team lost, 4-3 in 9 innings, to the West Potomac Wolverines in a Northern Region first round contest that started on Friday, and due to lightning and rain, was resumed on Saturday.

The Bulldogs had 17 hits in the game, but were unable to get enough runners across the plate to secure the victory. 2B Niki Prince, CF Sydney Broderick, C Beth Lewis, DP Katie Bellino, and LF Erin Dzurilla had multiple hits in the game. SS Cori Prince and Pinch Hitter Presley Gibson each had a hit, and RF Courtney Gibson reached base on a walk.

P Kelly McDaniel took the tough loss for Stone Bridge.

The Wolverines had 12 hits in the game, including five in the 6th inning that gave them a temporary lead of 3-2.

In the bottom of the 7th, however, the Bulldogs tied the score at 3 apiece when Broderick hit a leadoff single. Lewis sacrificed Broderick to 2nd base, and a batter later, Bellino hit a 2-out RBI for the score.

Stone Bridge shut West Potomac down in the top of the 8th, but unfortunately, left two of their own runners stranded on base in their half of the inning.

The Wolverines regrouped and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 9th inning on a Stone Bridge infield throwing error, and then a pair of hits.

Stone Bridge never quit. In the bottom of the 9th inning, with one out, Lewis roped the ball just short of the 225 foot left field fence. Unfortunately, she was stranded on base, and the game came to a close.
