Softball: Ashburn Shooting Stars 16U Black Finish Third in NSA A World Series

(Aug. 5, 2010) - The Ashburn Shooting Stars 16U Black softball team completed a successful summer by finishing third in the NSA A World Series in Charlotte. The team, which features players from Broad Run, Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls and Stone Bridge, ended the summer 25-2 against 16U competition and 8-4 playing against older 18U teams.

At the World Series, which had 49 teams competing, the Ashburn squad made it out of pool play with shutouts, 9-0 over the Illinois Wicked and 8-0 over the Indiana Eclipse. The Shooting Stars then beat the Indy Thunder, 11-1, before a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Delaware Cobras Black. In that game, Ashburn was down 2-0 with two outs and no runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning. After coming back to tie, third base Kayla Dost had the game-winning hit in extra innings.

Ashburn then beat the Finesse of Michigan, 4-1, and then the Mattooon Pride of South Carolina, 2-0, to move into the finals of the winner's bracket. Ashburn then fell to Schaumberg Sluggers Red of Illinois and then lost, 3-1, in a rematch with Mattoon. In that game, Ashburn had bases loaded twice without getting any runs across. Mattoon went on to win the World Series by sweeping Schaumberg in a doubleheader.

Earlier in the summer the Shooting Stars Black captured the NSA Virginia State title with a 6-0 record while allowing only four runs. The team then won the Firecracker College Showcase tournament with a 10-0 mark, scoring 100 runs in the process!

The team is moving up to the 18U age group and will be holding tryouts in August:
August 12 6-8pm Stone Bridge HS
August 21 10am-12pm Trailside 2
August 26 6-8pm Trailside 2

According to coach Phil Broderick: "We are looking for extremely committed players who desire to play at the highest level. We are particularly interested in adding a pitcher. We highly encourage attendance at all three tryouts, especially the first one on August 12."
