Football: Broad Run Names Stone Bridge Assistant Coach Matt Griffis to Head Program

Ashburn (Feb. 17, 2010) - Two-time defending VHSL Division 4 state champion Broad Run High School has hired long-time Stone Bridge assistant football coach Matt Griffis to lead the Spartan program.

Griffis, the offensive coordinator under Mickey Thompson at Stone Bridge, takes over for Mike Burnett, who left Broad Run last month to start a new program at Tuscarora High School which opens in Leesburg in the fall.

Broad Run will enter next season on a 28-game winning streak after back-to-back 14-0 seasons. Overall the Spartans have won 38 of their last 39.

"We are excited about it. He's going to do a great job," said Broad Run Athletic Director Jack Kirby.

Griffis, who teaches geometry and 9th grade health and physical education at Stone Bridge, was officially approved by the Loudoun Count Public School Board Tuesday night. Griffis has taught for 14 years in Loudoun County.

A graduate of Radford University with a degree in Elementary education, Griffis also earned his Masters Degree in special education from George Mason University.

Griffis played prep football at Herndon High School. His wife Robyn is a history teacher at Broad Run. They have three children: Libby (9), Mitch (8), and Brett (5).

As the offensive cooridinator for Stone Bridge, Griffis helped the Bulldogs to the 2007 VHSL Division 5 state title as well as runner-up state finishes in 2005 and 2009. The Bulldogs have won six regional titles in the last eight years.
