Swim: Broad Run Takes Two Titles at Northwest Region Meet with 200 Relay Team, Leidy in 100 Fly

(Feb. 13, 2012) - The Broad Run High School swim team won two titles at the AAA Northwest Region Swim Championships at the Freedom Center in Manassas on Friday with senior Jacob Leidy taking gold in the 100 fly in 53.00. Leidy also swam on Broad Run’s first-place 200 free relay. Leidy’s relay teammates, senior Alan Horback, sophomore Jack Morrisroe and freshman Michael Kopecky, dropped more than 2 seconds from their districts time to finish in 1:29.75.

The Spartan relay team has qualified to swim on Friday at the Virginia AAA State Swimming Championship at George Mason University.

Leidy and Horback have each qualified to swim two individual events at the state meet. In addition to the 100 fly, Leidy will swim the 100 breaststroke, in which he placed fourth at regionals in 1:03.27. Horback will be swimming the 50 and 100 freestyles at states. His 100 free time of 48.74 earned him fourth place and a new Broad Run school record. Horback also earned the bronze medal in the 50 free with a time of 22.21.

Freedom’s Michael Harman, who finished the 50 free in fourth place with a 22.39, has also advanced to the state meet.

The Broad Run girls broke two team records. Freshman Emily Adams swam a 1:02.43 in the 100 back to claim 11th place and break a record that has stood since 2003. In the 200 medley relay, Adams teamed with junior Caroline Rutteberg, freshman Megan Thiede and sophomore Brooke Graham for a 9th-place finish in 1:58.44, which broke the team record set earlier in the season.

In overall team scoring, the Broad Run boys finished 7th, while the girls were 12th. The Freedom girls placed 9th, and the boys finished 16th.
