Girls Basketball: Woodgrove Mauls Monticello to Earn First Ever State Tournament Trip

(Feb. 24, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School girls basketball team, in just its second season since the school opened, has earned its first trip to the VHSL state tournament as the Wolverines mauled Monticello Thursday, 66-31, in the Region II Division 3 semifinals.

Woodgrove (24-3) will now travel to face defending state champion Liberty on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the regional finals. Liberty captured the Division 4 state title last year and moved down to D3 this season. Both teams will advance to the state tournament.

Liberty advanced by beating another second-year school from Loudoun, Tuscarora, 52-24.


On Thursday Woodgrove jumped out to an early 20-6 lead by applying their smothering up-tempo defense. The Wolverines held a 36-15 halftime lead.

Despite some earlyfoul trouble, the Wolverines remained relentless on the defensive end of the court.

On the offensive end, the Wolverines made sure to take care of the ball. Woodgrove committed just two turnovers in the game.

Sarah Hardison and Brooke Basinger led the Wolverines with 14 points each. Hardison added 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Linsey Fagan came off the bench on fire and ended the game with 9 points. Ashley Tilly continued her stellar play byscoring 7 points and playing lock down defense. Nine Wolverines scored in the win.
