(Feb. 9, 2012) - The 2011-12 high school boys basketball season will go down in the record books as the single season with the most high-scoring single game performances ever with Nigel Johnson's likely all-time Loudoun record of 55 points last night against Osbourn just the icing on the cake.
Johnson's 55 erased Woodgrove's Brad Gilson's mark of 54 points which stood for just over a month. Before that Ryan McCarter set the Park View school record with 44 points in December, just two days after Michael Anderson of Loudoun County set his school record with 43 points. And a week ago, Myles Tate of Briar Woods set his school record with 42 points.
Potomac Falls' Greg Graves had to "settle" for a whopping 31 rebounds and 44 points against Park View, not a school record for points but certainly a school record for rebounds and likely an all-time Loudoun record. Gilson with 43 against Handley has the honor of having two games 40+ this year.
And did we mention the other 29 performances that broke 30 or more points! On the girls side, there have been just two 30+ performances this year both by Stone Bridge players with Murielle Tiernan scoring 39 against Madison and Nikki Prince scoring 31 against Langley.

How about the girls? :)
ReplyDeleteThe girls ... this has not been a season of high scoring performances for the girls ... while on the boys side we have Nigel Johnson, Brad Gilson, Ryan McCarter, Greg Graves and Myles Tate all listed in the Metro Area leaders scoring average Top 20 by the Post ... none of our local girls show on the list ... Unless somebody knows, I'm not sure any Loudoun girls are averaging over 15 points a game this year ...
ReplyDeleteStone Bridge Girls, Nikki Prince and Murielle Tiernan have each had 30+ pt games. Nikki on 1/31 v. Langley. Murielle on 1/20 v. Madison. Murielle is listed on allmetsports as 17.8 avg. Ashley O'Neill of Briar Woods is showing a 17.7 average
DeleteThanks ... I was wondering if both of their games by games are up-to-date on WashPost ... I know Murielle missed some games but she is just shown as only having played about 10 games ... did she miss another 10 to 11? And Ashley is missing 6 games from BW ... completing those records could change their averages ... up or down ...Carl Luat of the Loudoun Times-Mirror were talking this week and both of us are surprised that teams in Loudoun seemed to have stopped sending out boxes to LTM/VivaLoudoun ... Out of 24 teams, we get an average of 4 box scores a night!
ReplyDeleteJust using WashPost data ... Tiernan and O'Neil are the only 2 girls in Loudoun averaging over 15 points a game ... In 5 of the 12 programs, no girl is averaging more than 10.9 ppg ... Scoring on the girls side could be a trend to watch as I am hearing more and more from coaches around Loudoun that they are not seeing enough girls coming up through the AAU ranks with volleyball, lax, soccer siphoning off talent ... Some programs are no longer fielding freshman teams and in Ashburn among the two of the three middle schools no longer have girls teams in the county travel league ...
