(Feb. 17, 2012) - The Loudoun Valley boys and Loudoun County girls captured Dulles District tournament basketball titles Friday night at Heritage High School. The Valley boys beat Potomac Falls, 57-37, and the County girls beat Woodgrove, 39-33.
In the boys game, Loudoun Valley (22-3) scored the first 11 points of the championship and led Potomac Falls (17-8), 15-2, after the first quarter with senior John Yoxthimer scoring 13 of his game-high 21. He also had 10 board as the Vikings out-rebounded the Panthers, 42-27. In all, four Vikes ended in double figures with junior Jovon Miller scoring 14 and junior s Cameron Kiani and Josh Grimard each getting 10.
Potomac Falls, 1 of 15 from 3-point range in the loss, was led by Greg Graves with 11 points and six rebounds.
In the girls game, Loudoun County (19-7) trailed early sophomore Maggie Phillips fueled a 12-2 run that started midway in the first quarter and put the Raider up for good. By halftime the Raiders were up by double digits, 21-11, and the Wolverines could only claw back to within in five points in the second half.
Phillips finished with 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Seniors Erica Linnemann and Katrina Kirby had eight points each for the Raiders. Senior Casey Cummings hauled down 13 rebounds for County and Kirby had eight.
Woodgrove junior Sarah Hardison and sophomore Halle Lynch each had nine.
