(Jan. 13, 2012) - In just their second year since opening in Purcellville, the Woodgrove High School scholastic team shined by capturing both the Dulles District regular season and tournament titles.
Woodgrove and runner-up Briar Woods now advance to the Region II tournament Feb. 4 at Warren County High School.
In the quarterfinals of the tournament held Thursday at Loudoun County High School, No. 1 Woodgrove, No. 2 Briar Woods and No. 4 Loudoun Valley all advanced in the quarterfinals with No. 6 Potomac Falls pulling off the upset over No. 3 Loudoun County.
Woodgrove and Potomac Falls advanced to the winner's bracket semifinals with wins over Loudoun Valley and Briar Woods. Woodgrove then beat Potomac Falls to advance to the finals.
In the consolation bracket, No. 8 Tuscarora eliminated No. 5 Park View and Loudoun County eliminated No. 7 Dominion. Loudoun Valley then ended County's tournament and Briar Woods eliminated Tuscarora. Briar Woods kept on a roll, ending Valley's regional's hopes and then clinching the regional bid with a win over darkhorse Potomac Falls.
Woodgrove finished the tournament with a win over Briar Woods for the twin championships.
Woodgrove team members: Joseph Ghiozi, Christopher Miller, Christina Harvey, Keegan Ottoson, Julia Hiser, Carolyn Saunders, Benedict Lenhart, Tara Saunders, Jullian Lineburg and Jocelyn Westray. The Wolverines are coached by Louis Spicer.
Briar Woods teams members: Taylor Krystkowiak, Hugh Mosher, Lily Nguyen, Caleb Scott, Kellie Smith, Priya Venkatraman, Greg Waldrip and Chris Woods. The Falcons are coached by Steve Celio and Ben Scarborough.
