Swim: Potomac Falls Sweeps Boys, Girls Dulles District Meet

Potomac Falls Girls 4x100 Relay Bring Home the Title for the Panthers!

(Jan. 28, 2012) - The Potomac Falls High School boys and girls swim teams started and ended the 2012 Dulles District meet the same way -- touching the wall first in relays -- and in between the Panthers boys were overwhelming and the Panther girls fought off a brave challenge from Briar Woods as both claim district titles.

The Potomac Falls boys, winning all three relays, and picking up two first place finishes from freshman William Lin (200 IM, 500 free) and a first from Eoghan Foley (50 free), had too much depth for the field, nearly doubling second-place Briar Woods (245 points) with 433.5 total points. Loudoun County took third (238) followed by Tuscarora (232.5), Dominion (227.5), Woodgrove (210), Heritage (189), Loudoun Valley (154.5) and Park View (72).

The Potomac Falls girls also got two wins from a super freshman as Kiri Harvey took the 200 free and 100 back. The Panthers came into the final race of the night, the 400 free relay, just 0.5 points ahead of Briar Woods and Potomac Falls with Carson Newton, Lindsey Oteyza, Ariana Staffen and Harvey finished ahead of Briar Woods to take the team title, 349.5 to 343. Tuscarora was third (279) followed by Dominion (237), Loudoun County (196), Heritage (178), Woodgrove (178), Park View (146) and Loudoun Valley (59.5).

Potomac Falls coach Neil Costello saw his boys and girls win Dulles District titles Friday!

Heritage's Kaleigh Rosenburg and Loudoun County's Sophie Newton each won two events.

Rosenburg set two meet records with a 2:10.49 finish in the 200 IM, breaking Stone Bridge's Suzanne Schwee's mark of 2:10.82 that had stood since 2005, and then smashed the 1:07.82 mark of Tuscarora's Amanda Presgraves from last year with a 1:06.30 in the 100 breast.

Newton got her own meet record, swimming 25.33 in the 50 free to break Broad Run's Nicole Poltash's mark from 2006 of 24.75. Newton also won the 100 fly.

Dominion's Aidan O'Hara won both the 200 free and 100 back with a meet record in the latter event of 54.33 to break the 55.15 mark set last year by Broad Run's Jacob Leidy. Loudoun Valley's Ian Miller captured the 100 breast.

Briar Woods' Erica Comm too the 100 free and teammate Lizzie Mittan won the 500 free. Briar Woods' Brennan Maxwell won the 100 fly and teammate Eric Guessford won the 100 free as the Falcons had a good night in the pool in the both boys and girls side of things.

The Dominion girls were not only a surprise winner in the 200 free relay but Ashley Brock, Maura Mazurowski, Casey Tinius (a stand-in after a later injury) and Rachel Williams timed a meet record 1:43.04 to shatter the mark of 1:43.70 set by Potomac Falls in 2008.

The Potomac Falls boys exclamation point to a tremendous meet was a record 3:25.84 in the 400 free relay as Lin brought home a fast anchor after great swims by teammates Gavin Saunders, Sean Hurrell and Riley Jamison. The old mark was 3:25.91 set by Broad Run last year. The Spartans could not defend their title as they, along with Freedom, moved up the AAA Cedar Run District this year.

More analysis later on the meet.
