News: New Loudoun County Public Schools Board Takes Office; Hornberger Elected Chairman

(Jan. 4, 2012) - Loudoun County’s fifth elected School Board officially took office on Tuesday, January 3rd, during a ceremony at the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administrative Offices in Ashburn.

Loudoun County Circuit Court Clerk Gary Clemens administered the oath of office to three returning and six new board members.

After the board was sworn in, it elected Eric Hornberger (Ashburn District) as its chairman. Jill Turgeon (Blue Ridge District) was elected vice chairman.


Hornberger and Turgeon are newly elected members of the board. Other newly elected members are Debbie Rose (Algonkian District), Kevin Kuesters (Broad Run District), Jeff Morse (Dulles District) and Bill Fox (Leesburg District).

Returning board members include Tom Reed (At-Large), Jennifer Bergel (Catoctin District) and Brenda Sheridan (Sterling District).

The School Board retained its traditional meeting schedule. It will meet at 4 and 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday. (There will be no School Board meetings in July and no fourth Tuesday School Board meetings in August and December.)

The School Board also adopted some routine motions:
• Christine Coleman was selected as clerk of the board and Patricia Fairfax as deputy clerk;
• Assistant Superintendent Ned D. Waterhouse was appointed designee of the superintendent;
• Assistant Superintendent for Business and Financial Services E. Leigh Burden was appointed the board’s agent and Director of Financial Services Thomas C. Yetter deputy agent.
