Basketball: The Skinny on Friday Night's Schedule

(Jan. 13, 2012) - Teams will be looking to finish strong before heading into their midterm break which starts after Saturday's schedule.

Boys Basketball
Woodgrove at Briar Woods, 7:30
The Skinny: Can the Falcons tame WG's Brad "Field Golazo" Gilson who dropped a Loudoun record 54 points on Park View this season? Can the Wolverines stop BW's point guard dynamo Myles Tate, who can beat you off the dribble or from NBA 3-point range? Woodgrove at 5-3 in Dulles District needs this win to stay on the heals of Potomac Falls (6-2) and Loudoun Valley (8-1). Briar Woods (6-0) needs this win to stay perfect in the district.

Freedom at Broad Run, 7:30
The Skinny: BR (2-4 in district) and Freedom (1-4) have taken their lumps thus far in the tough Cedar Run. Tonight they get to take it out on each other. Nigel Johnson is a scoring machine for the Spartans.

Dominion at Potomac Falls, 7:30
The Skinny: Park View's Ryan McCarter went for 44 against the Titans so PF's Greg Graves, with 44 and 31 (yes 31!) rebounds against Park View, could really do some damage tonight in the Panther Pit.

Heritage at Park View, 7:30
The Skinny: Big game in the middle of the standings as one of these two teams will climb to 5-5 in Dulles and the other drops to 4-6. McCarter is the key. Pride have proven they can play with any team in Dulles.

Loudoun County at Loudoun Valley, 7:30
The Skinny: There was a time when this was THE rivalry in the county but things have cooled a bit with the new schools opening in Leesburg and Purcellville. Valley's zone defense will look to clamp down on Raider Michael Anderson. LC must stop the Yox ... John Yoxthimer.

TJ at Stone Bridge, 7:30
The Skinny: A battle of teams 1-4 in the Liberty ... look for Bulldogs to bust out a 20-point plus victory ... yes, you read that here first!

The Skinny: Woodgrove has proved a solid No. 2 to LC thus far in the Dulles at 8-1. Briar Woods is at .500 (4-4). Wolverines like to push the pace.

Freedom at Broad Run, 6
The Skinny: Freedom isn't used to its 5-11 mark but has had a tough schedule so expect them to run away in this opener of the DH.

Potomac Falls at Dominion, 7:30
The Skinny: Dominion at 2-7 in Dulles can move into a tie with neighbor Potomac Falls (3-7). Both teams have been playing games closer than their marks indicate.

Park View at Heritage, 7:30
The Skinny: Is Park View's recent string of wins for real? We find out more tonight against a Pride team that has struggled a bit in the new year.

Loudoun Valley at Loudoun County, 7:30
The Skinny: County will have no problem emptying its bench against the winless Vikes.

Stone Bridge at TJ, 7:30
The Skinny: The top of the Liberty is a bruising battle so expect a Stone Bridge team, licking its wounds at 3-2 in district, to take out its frustrations on a TJ with just two wins on the season and none in district.

Football: Stone Bridge's Allen Offered by Virginia Tech; Broad Run's Jessop Commits as Preferred Walk-on at VT

(Jan. 13, 2012) - Virginia Tech, a day after offering Briar Woods High School junior linebacker Matt Rolin, has now joined the growing pool of schools soliciting the services of Stone Bridge defensive lineman Jon Allen.

And the Hokies pipeline to Loudoun keeps growing as Washington Post uber-recruiting news reporting Paul Tenorio reports that Broad Run quarterback Connor Jessop has committed to VT as a preferred walk-on.

For those of you keeping track at home, Allen now has offers from: Boston College, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Penn St., Rutgers, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Wake Forest, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech.

Baseball: Woodgrove Duo Reed and Sarty Tabbed as MLB Draft Prospects

(Jan. 13, 2012) - Woodgrove High School seniors, catcher Matthew Reed and infielder J.J. Sarty have been tabbed as Major League Baseball draft prospects for 2012 by the MLB Draft Prospects blog.

Volleyball: Loudoun County's Jenica Matthias Named Virginia and Mideast Coach of the Year for 2010-11

(Jan. 13, 2012) - Loudoun County High School girls volleyball coach Jenica Matthias, who has led the Raiders to six consecutive AA state finals including a state title run from 2007 to 2010, has been honored by the National Federation of State High School Associations as the 2010-11 Virginia Coach of the Year as well s the Mideast (Section 2) Coach of the Year.

The NFSHSA is made up of 8 sections, and Section 2 includes: Delaware, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Her Section 2 honor made her one of the eight National Coach of the Year finalists for volleyball.

News: Woodgrove Adds Dulles District Scholastic Bowl Tournament Title to Regular Season Championship

(Jan. 13, 2012) - In just their second year since opening in Purcellville, the Woodgrove High School scholastic team shined by capturing both the Dulles District regular season and tournament titles.

Woodgrove and runner-up Briar Woods now advance to the Region II tournament Feb. 4 at Warren County High School.

Wrestling: Freedom Wraps Up Share of Cedar Run District Regular Season Title

(Jan. 13, 2012) - The Freedom High School wrestling team wrapped up at least a share of their 3rd consecutive regular season district championship on Wednesday night when the Eagles swept a pair of Cedar Run District matches.

Wrestling: Woodgrove Sweeps Briar Woods, Tuscarora

(Jan. 13, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School wrestling teams swept Dulles District foes Briar Woods, 41-30, and Tuscarora, 54-27, on Wednesday.

Luke Segerdahl, Bret Decker, Joe Cavallaro, and Dylan O'Conner has two wins at their weight classes. Devon Potts and Jack Wehr also had two wins while wrestling two weight classes.

Football: Briar Woods JR Linebacker Matt Rolin Gets Offer from Virginia Tech

(Jan. 12, 2012) - How could the Hokies pass on Matt Rolin!?! Virginia Tech has officially offered the Briar Woods High School junior linebacker, joining Boston College, Tennessee and Washington to seek the services of the athletic playmaker.

Rolin's brother Scott, was a redshirt walkon at Virginia Tech this past fall. In his first two seasons on varsity, Rolin has helped the Falcons to back-to-back Division 4 state titles.

Gymnastics: Loudoun County Third in Top Division at Glory Days Park View Invitational; Loudoun Valley Wins Blue Division

(Jan. 12, 2012) - Loudoun County High School took third in the Red Division, behind AAA Colonial Forge and Osbourn Park, at the Glory Days Park View Invitational over the weekend. Loudoun Valley captured the lower Blue Division at the 13-team meet.

News: Athletic Administrators, Coaches Expected to Show for LCPS Budget Hearing Tonight

(Jan. 12, 2012) - Loudoun County public high school administrators and coaches are expected to show tonight to support athletics at a Loudoun County Public Schools public budget hearing which starts at 6:30 p.m. at the school admin building in Ashburn.

The proposed budget for 2013 eliminates the $100 athletic fee per athlete per sport and it also proposes a 3 percent salary increase for all staff along with a 3 percent increase in coaching stipends.

One local coach: "Needless to say, if the proposed budget needs to be reduced, athletic fees and coaching stipend increases could be affected. With a new School Board reviewing the budget, it is important that we show support for these items."

Equestrian: Briar Woods Takes Solid 9th in First Ever Competition

(Jan. 12, 2012) - The Briar Woods High School club equestrian team, Loudoun's first such public high school to have a team, placed a solid ninth out of 15 teams in their first ever show, the Pickwick-Clay Hill show held over the weekend in Maryland.

The Falcons finish is impressive considering many of the teams they faced have been together and competing since September.

Wrestling: Freedom Wins Pair of Cedar Run Matches, Runner-up Finish at Wolverine Duals

(Jan. 12, 2012) - The Freedom High School wrestling team had another outstanding week of wrestling as they competed on both Wednesday in Cedar Run District competition as well as Saturday at the Wolverine Duals at North Stafford.

Wrestling: Tuscarora Making Strides in District Losses to Briar Woods, Woodgrove

(Jan. 12, 2012) - Tuscarora High School varsity wrestling coach Andrew Bango is seeing improvement in his squad as they wrestle their second season since the school opened. On Wednesday the Huskies fell 48-30 to Briar Woods and 54-37 to Woodgrove.

"This is the second year open for both Tuscarora and Woodgrove and both schools are making great gains," said Bango.

Tuscarora had several wrestlers go 2-0 on the night: Alex McCord, Saxon Downs, Alejandro Avelar, Dionte Fitts, and Ryan Fleming.

Girls Soccer: Woodgrove Junior Brittany Basinger Selected to U.S. U-17 Women's National Team Camp

(Jan. 12, 2012) - It has been an exciting winter already for Woodgrove High School junior Brittany Basinger as the starting point guard has helped the Wolverine girls basketball team to a 12-2 start, she committed early to play NCAA Division I soccer at Penn State University and now the talented athlete has been selected to the U.S. Under-17 Women's National Team training camp in February.

Basinger is one of 24 players invited to the training camp in Sunrise, Fla, which will be held Feb. 3-11. The camp will feature two international games with Germany. This training camp will play an important role in the evaluation of players as this age group continues to progress and prepare for CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifying tournament in Guatemala City from May 2-13. The finalists and third-place match winner will qualify for the 2012 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.

Softball: Broad Run Senior Kate Sims to Play at Daytona State Next Year

(Jan. 12, 2012) - Broad Run High School senior Kate Sims will sign this weekend to play softball next year in Daytona Beach, Fla. at Daytona State junior college.

Sims, who verbally committed last week, plans on playing outfield for the Lady Falcons which have a good track record of placing their players in NCAA Division I programs. Sims hopes to transfer to the University of Central Florida in Orlando after her two seasons at Daytona State.

News: Constitutional Officer Week in Loudoun Includes Food Drive

(Jan. 11, 2012) - In recognition of Constitutional Officer Week in Loudoun County, the county'€™s constitutional officers will hold a food drive January 16 to benefit the Interfaith Relief organization. Residents are asked to drop off non-perishable food items during the week at the offices of the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Commissioner of the Revenue, Commonwealth's Attorney, Sheriff and Treasurer.

News: John Champe Names Glen Gragasin as Volleyball Coach and CaSandra Alexander as Cross Country Coach

Aldie (Jan. 11, 2012) - At Tuesday's Loudoun County school board meeting, Glen Gragasin was approved as the first head volleyball coach for John Champe High School which opens in the fall 2012 and CaSandra Alexander as the school's first cross country coach.

Previously Broad Run assistant Jason Dawson had been named football coach and Cynthia Martinez was picked as the school's varsity cheerleading coach. More on each hire:

News: Vote for VivaLoudoun's High School Sports Team of 2011

(Jan. 11, 2011) - Loudoun schools brought home five state titles in 2011 and we asking VivaLoudoun fans to pick one of those teams as our Team of the Year.

Three of the five schools are from Briar Woods including the Falcons football, competitive cheer and softball squads. Broad Run girls soccer won the vote in 2010 and the Spartans are back in the running after a fourth straight AA state title. Briar Woods cheer, which won a third straight state title, won the vote in 2009.

Both the Potomac Falls boys basketball and Briar Woods football programs added back-to-back state titles. The Briar Woods softball team captures it first ever state crown.

Girls Basketball: Foxcroft to Host Third Annual "Think Pink" Tournament to Benefit Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation

Middleburg (Jan. 10, 2012) - Basketballs will be bouncing all day at Foxcroft School on Saturday, Jan. 14, when 14 varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams compete in the third annual Think Pink Basketball Tournament.

The tournament, which will benefit the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation, begins at 10 a.m. in the School’s Athletic/Student Center. Using three full-size basketball courts, teams will participate in a round-robin format with trophies awarded to the team with the best record.

Girls Soccer: Spartans Five State Championship Teams Honored

(Jan. 10, 2012) - Broad Run High School honored its five girls soccer state championship teams -- including a current run of four straight VHSL AA state titles -- at halftime of the boys basketball game on Friday night. On hand were players and coaches from all five state championship teams (2001, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011) to acknowledge a record-tying performance by a Loudoun County high school athletic program (5 state championships: tying the state championships won by the Park View gymnastics teams from the 1980s).

College Corner: Heritage Grad, West Virginia Football Walkon Nick Cadwell Awarded Full Scholarship for Spring Semester

(Jan. 9, 2012) - Hard does indeed pay off, just ask Heritage High School grad Nick Cadwell, a redshirt junior walkon safety at West Virginia, who not only saw kickoff action in the Orange Bowl but has been awarded a full scholarship for this upcoming spring semester.

Cadwell posted on Facebook Sunday: "Today I got some of the best news of my life. I found out that I will now have a full scholarship for football to WVU. Thank you to all of you that have always believed in me and always been there for me. Its a great day to be a mountaineer!!"

Cadwell graduated from Heritage in 2008 after a standout prep career that included 218 tackles with 126, 60 of them solo and nine sacks, coming in his senior year. Cadwell walked onto the Mountaineer program where he redshirted in 2008 and was a scout team star in 2009 and 2010. This season Cadwell broke onto the depth charts, coming into the season as No. 3 at free safety.

Cadwell said he was driving back for the spring semester when he got the call about the scholarship, and it was a complete surprise.

"They just started to talk to me about my good grades and that how I have been working really hard and that they have notice it and they said that they were going to put me on scholarship for this semester. I didnt know how to react," said Cadwell.
