Boys Basketball: Middleburg's Nik Brown Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone

Nik Brown broke the 1,000-point career scoring mark this week

Middleburg (Feb. 4, 2011) - Middleburg Academy guard Nik Brown reached a milestone earlier this week as he hit the 1,000-point career scoring mark as the Dragons improved to 16-3 in their first season under coach Gary Hall with an 88-39 runaway win over St. John's Catholic Prep.

"We are blessed at Middleburg Academy to have a young man with the character, integrity and work ethic of Nik Brown to be the face of our basketball program," said Hall.

Brown, who played the last two years at Stone Bridge, is averaging 18.2 points per game along with 6.3 assists and 3.2 steals per game.

"I have been very fortunate in my coaching career to have had the opportunity to coach some of the finest players in Northern Virginia and Nik ranks among the all-time best," said Hall. " His leadership qualities and dedication to the game are unparallel. It is an honor for me to be a part of his development both on and off the court."

The Dragons are ranked No. 2 the state among Division II private schools. Their only losses this year have been by a combined seven points to Blue Ridge School (No. in state Division 1 privates), Osbourn (No. 5 in state AAA) and Booker T Washington (No. 2 in state AAA).

Middleburg Academy will take on nationally-ranked Montrose Christian on Saturday, February 19 at 7 p.m. at Hoop Magic in Chantilly.

Gymnastics and Wrestling: Dulles District Meets Start Times Pushed Back Saturday Due to Ice Threat

(Feb. 4, 2011) - The Dulles District wrestling tournament scheduled at Freedom High School in South Riding Saturday will be pushed back two hours in anticipation of any ice in the morning.

Buses will be moved back two hours from the original scheduled times. Weigh ins begin at 10 a.m. and wrestling will begin at 11.

The Dulles District Gymnastics Meet scheduled at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn will be pushed back one hour and buses will be rescheduled accordingly. Competition will begin at 1 p.m.

Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls Makes Bold Statement as Short-handed Panthers Blast Broad Run, 82-60

Sterling (Feb. 4, 2011) - There are statement games and then there are STATEment games and the later is what the Potomac Falls High School boys basketball team produced Thursday night as the defending Division 4 state champion Panthers, playing without All-State senior Lukas Mihailovich, blasted rival Broad Run, 82-60, to all but wrap up the Dulles District regular season title.

The win for Potomac Falls (13-0 in district, 18-1 overall), paced by senior Brendon Chesson (23 points) and junior Greg Graves (21 points), had to send shockwaves across not only the district but the region and state as well. If the Panthers, without all its starters, could handle a hot high-scoring Broad Run (10-2, 16-2) team, then how can they be denied a second straight state title when playing at full strength.

"All we heard about was that we had no chance playing without (Mihailovich)," said Graves of his teammate who had to sit out the game after an ejection in Monday's win over Loudoun County. "We just said we are going to play our game and beat them. We can do it with (Mihailovich) or we can do it without him if we play as a team."

Girls Basketball: Heritage Sweeps Season Series with Loudoun Valley

Purcellville (Jan. 30, 2011) - The Heritage High School girls basketball team shot a season high 51 percent from the field, 33 percent from behind the arc, and 73 percent from the free throw line Saturday night for their second Cedar Run District win over Loudoun Valley this season, as they beat the Vikings, 67-50, on the road.

Earlier in the season the Pride had defeated Valley 58-41 at home.

Valley controlled the game for the first four minutes, using a full court zone press that allowed the Vikings to start the game on a 15-4 run.

The Pride, however, quickly answered with a firm press break and press of their own, ending the first quarter on a 7-0 run.

When Heritage wins a game, they usually don’t play from behind, but for the second time on the week – Tuesday they came from behind to beat Potomac Falls – the Pride fought hard while trailing, outscoring Valley 24-13 in the second quarter.

Pride freshman Kayla Tibbs was the first half leading scorer with 12 as she led her team into the locker room at the half, up 35-28.

Valley didn’t get a break in the second half as Heritage continued to pour on the points. This time led by junior guard Kayla Whoolery, who scored 12 second-half points, the Pride looked to have a healthy lead after three quarters of play, 51-40.

In the fourth quarter, Heritage, a 54 percent free throw shooting team connected on all six of their free throws icing the game for the Pride.

Heritage’s head coach Anthony Long felt that the key to victory was that “tonight we had the game and pace of the game where we wanted them.”

He added that in order to beat Battlefield this Friday, a team that beat Heritage in their first meeting 50-42, his girls need to “take better care of the ball and attack the zone.”

Gymnastics: Loudoun Valley's Bramhall and White Help Vikings Qualify for Regionals

Leesburg (Feb. 3, 2011) - Jessica Bramhall and Victoria White both qualified for the Northwest Regionals in All-Around by finishing in the top four Wednesday at the Cedar Run District meet and the Viking duo helped Loudoun Valley High School move on to regionals as well with a second place finish behind champion Battlefield.

Battlefield scored a strong 145.250 for the title while the Vikes posted a season-best 129.625. Host Heritage was fourth in the five-team meet with 96.975. Gar-Field won the 3-team Cardinal District meet held at the same time.

Battlefield's Brianna Artz won the All-Around with a 37.475. Her teammate Alex Fairbanks was runner-up at 36.525. Bramhall was third (35.200) followed by White (32.175) in the fourth and final qualifying spot.

In each event, the top eight moved on to the Northwest Region meet which will be held Feb. 11, starting at 5 p.m., at Loudoun Valley.

Swim: Battlefield Sweeps Boys, Girls Cedar Run District Meet; Heritage Girls Second, Boys Third

(Feb. 2, 2011) - Battlefield High School swam away with both the girls and boys titles at the Cedar Run District meet Saturday in Manassas. Locally, Heritage fared well with the Pride girls runner-up and the boys third.

Kaleigh Rosenburg of Heritage and Kelsey Ryan of Loudoun Valley each won two individual events with Rosenburg taking the 200 IM (2:10.01) and 100 breast (1:06.76), while Ryan won the 100 fly (59.71) and 100 back (1:01.19).

The Pride also won the girls 200 free relay with Katie Lee, Alaina Doiron, Shannon Ober and Jordan Gold teaming for the win.

On the boys side, Rosenburg's brother, Damon, took the 100 breast with a 1:00.34.

Gymnastics: Stone Bridge Captures Third Straight Liberty District Title; Bulldog Senior Severin Wins All-Around

Ashburn (Feb. 2, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School, led by a group of seniors that included All-Around winner Tori Severin, recovered from a slow start Monday night and captured the school's third straight AAA Liberty District gymnastics title.

The Bulldogs, after a shaky start on the bars -- a tough event compounded by a lack of practice due to snow days -- recovered nicely on the beam -- where Stone Bridge swept the top four spots on the podium -- and went on to score 140.800 points for the win.

Thomas Jefferson, led in part by Loudoun-based gymnast Caroline Kerr, finished second with 129.025 points to move onto the Northern Region meet next week at Lake Braddock.

Stone Bridge is looking for a top two finish at the regional meet to make States, something the team has just missed the past two years with third place finishes and less than one point each time out of the state bid.

"Their goal is to go to States," said Stone Bridge coach Catherine Morrison, whose team has the experience and talent to pull it off. "We are a senior heavy team with three seniors competing in the All-Around and a fourth senior competing in three of four events."

One of those seniors, Severin, competing in her first meet since a back injury in early January, captured the All-Around, something she hadn't done as the Bulldogs won the previous two team titles, with a 35.525 score, edging TJ's Maris Kataoka (35.225). McLean's Abigail Neuberger (35.025) was third and Stone Bridge sophomore Tricia Grywatch (34.775) was fourth followed by Kerr (34.175).

"Tori did such a great job tonight ... she deserved to win," said Morrison.

For Severin and the other seniors it was an emotional end as they finished up their final every meet at Stone Bridge.

"It is sad. We are going to miss it next year. We have been together since our freshman year and it feels amazing to win three straight titles," said Severin.

Severin won the All-Around with depth as she scored medaled in each event but didn't take first in any of the four disciplines: Kataoka won the vault (9.000), Neuberger won the bars (8.800), Stone Bridge senior Reagan Lashlee and freshman teammate Katie Crawford tied on the beam (9.500) and Stone Bridge senior Amy Fissmer, last year's All-Around champion, captured the floor at 9.425.

Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls to Host Broad Run without Suspended Mihailovich Thursday

(Feb. 2, 2011) - Potomac Falls High School boys basketball coach Jeff Hawes confirmed to VivaLoudoun this week that his 17-1 Panthers will host 15-1 Broad Run Thursday without top player Lukas Mihailovich after the senior was ejected from Monday's win at Loudoun County. Mihailovich, who led PFalls to the Division 4 state title last season, must sit one game after the ejection.

First place in the Dulles District standings is at stake on Thursday as the Panthers enter the game 12-0 in district and the Spartans are 9-1 with their only loss to Potomac Falls.

Boys Basketball: A True Myles-tone as Briar Woods' Tate Reaches 1,000 Career Points in Less Than Three Seasons

Ashburn (Feb. 1, 2011) - Briar Woods High School junior Myles Tate broke the 1,000-point career scoring mark Monday night in the Falcons 71-64 win over Park View. Tate had 24 points in the win to reach 1,002 career points and keep the Falcons firmly in third place in the Dulles District race behind leaders Potomac Falls and Broad Run.

"I am lucky to have a player like Myles who is blessed with the talent that he possesses," said Briar Woods coach Mike Benson. "Throughout the last three years, he has grown tremendously as a player and a leader. He does not only score points for our team, he is a strong leader and a role model for kids."

Benson continued: "He has led this team at the toughest position on the floor, point guard. There aren't many point guards who also score as many points as Myles and contribute on the defensive end of the floor. Every year since he has been at the helm of this program, we have improved along with him. I am looking forward to having him another year to set more records at Briar Woods."

The Falcons are 9-3 in Dulles District play, two games behind Broad Run (9-1) in the loss column, with four contests to play for BWoods and six to play for the Spartans. Potomac Falls is 12-0 with four to go.

On the girls side, Loudoun County is 11-1 with four to play, one game ahead of Freedom (10-2).

(Feb. 1, 2011) - Forty-five schools in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) have been honored by Gov. Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Board of Education as part of the 2011 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards for advanced learning and achievement.

Baseball: Stone Bridge Transfer Ryan Johnston to Play Next Year at Concord University

Ashburn (Feb. 1, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior Ryan Johnston, who transferred this school year from Broad Run where he was an All-District and All-Region DH, has committed to play baseball next year at NCAA Division II Concord University in West Virginia.

Johnston was also named second team Group AA All-State by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.

Concord, under first year coach Andrew Wright, was picked to finish 3rd in 2011 in the reconfigured South Division in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's annual pre-season coaches poll. Wright takes over for Kevin Garrett, who left the dugout to be Concord's Director of Athletics. In Garrett's 15 seasons, he elevated CU from also-ran to perennial power. His teams won a school-record 355 games, along with four division titles and a conference championship in 2001 – Concord's first in 40 years. The Mountain Lions qualified for the WVIAC Tournament in each of Garrett's final 13 seasons and reached the NCAA tournament in 2001, 2008 and 2009.

Soccer: Broad Run Senior Brooke Collins to Play at IUP and Potomac Falls Senior Isaac Owusu to Play at VCU

Ashburn (Feb. 1, 2011) - More local soccer commitments are rolling in as Broad Run High School senior Brooke Collins will play for NCAA Division II Indiana Univiersity of Pennsylvania and Potomac Falls senior Isaac Owusu will play for NCAA Division I Virginia Commonwealth.

Collins has helped the Spartans to the last two of their three straight state titles including a 22-2-1 season in 2010. The midfielder is one of the captains of the Loudoun 93G Red club team.

After playing in a Bethesda tournament just a few months ago with her travel team, Collins was contacted by IUP and she made a visit to the campus.

"I loved it! The campus was perfect and after spending some time with girls on the team I knew it was the right school for me," said Collins. "I plan to play defensive center mid for the team this upcoming fall."

IUP went 9-8-1 last year including 7-6-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Owusu was second team All-Dulles District and plays defender for his club soccer team with McLean Premier Soccer.

Football: Stone Bridge to Host Signing Ceremony for Four Bulldogs Wednesday

Ashburn (Feb. 1, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School will a signing ceremony Wednesday for four football players in the school's cafeteria at 4 p.m.

Spenser Rositano (Boston College), Rob Burns (Virginia), Calvin Hollenhorst (Coastal Carolina) and John Cheretis (Washington and Lee) will all take part in the ceremony. The quartet has helped the Bulldogs finish runner-up in Division 5 in the state the past two years while collecting two Liberty District and Northern Region titles.

Football: More Honors for Briar Woods as Scott Rolin Named VHSCA AA Defensive Player of the Year; Pierce is Coach of the Year

(Feb. 1, 2011) - To the Falcons the spoils as Briar Woods High School continues to rack up the postseason honors after the school's first ever state title in December. Defensive back Scott Rolin has been named the Virginia High School Coaches Association AA Defensive Player of the Year and Charlie Pierce is the Division 4 Coach of the Year.

Briar Woods linebacker DeVontae O'Bannion also picked up first team honors as did Dominion running back Deandre Reaves. Falcon defensive lineman Pat Baker was named to the second team and Rolin picked up honorable mention at wide receiver as did teammate Patrick Derrickson at center and Loudoun County tight end Jack Reimers.

Harrisonburg running back Michael Holmes was the Offensive Player of the Year and Elliott Duty of Poquoson was named the Division 3 Coach of the Year.

News: Loudoun Schools Turn 2-Hour Delay into Full Closure

(Feb. 1, 2011) - The start of February is looking an awful like the end of January for Loudoun County Public Schools students as the schools are closed today after icy conditions this morning, making it the fifth school closure due to weather since Jan. 18 and seven missed days counting holidays and teacher workdays since Jan. 17.

In fact, with midterms sandwiched around the weather cancellations, high school students in Loudoun have had one regular instructional day since Jan. 14 as the four days of exams were bracketed by MLK holiday and a cancellation on one end and a teacher workday and three cancellations on the other end.
