Football: Briar Woods Hosts Signing Celebration for 3 Football Players: Rizzardi (Coast Guard), Hill, Owens (Glenville St) Plus Hoops Star Tate (Mars Hill)

(May 28, 2012) - Briar Woods High School held a signing celebration last wee for three football player -- Joe Rizzardi (U.S. Coast Guard Academy), Jamal Hill (Glenville State) and Kevin Owens (Glenville Stae) -- plus 4-year basketball standout Myles Tate (Mars Hill).

The football signings brings Briar Woods total senior committed to play next year to 21, same as Stone Bridge, and one more than Broad Run, trailing only Freedom with 24. Football also now has more signees than soccer.

Boys Basketball: Briar Woods 4-Year Standout Tate Commits to Play at Mars Hill College in N.C.

Ashburn (May 15, 2012) - Myles Tate, a 4-year standout at Briar Woods High School, has committed to playing next year at NCAA Division II Mars Hill College located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, 20 minutes north of Asheville, N.C.

Falcon coach Mike Benson reports that Tate received a full scholarship and has a shot at taking over the point guard position for the Lions. Tate was the starting point guard for Briar Woods for four years and graduates as the school's all-time leading scorer.

Benson: "I am extremely proud of Myles and I think he made a great decision."

The school of 1,295 students recently named Rick Scruggs as the new head men's basketball coach. Scruggs  was the associate head coach at Appalachian State following 15 years as head coach at Gardner-Webb University. Mars Hill College plays in the South Atlantic Conference along with Anderson, LMU, Wingate, Newberry, Carson-Newman, Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum, Catawba and Brevard.

Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls' Graves Named D4 State Player of the Year

(March 27, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School senior Greg Graves, who finished his boys basketball career with the Panthers with 1,000+ points and rebounds, has been named the Virginia High School Coaches Association Division 4 Player of the Year for the state of Virginia.

The Panthers won state titles in 2010 and 2011 with Graves and made it to the state semifinals this past season.

Also honored were Briar Woods senior Myles Tate and Loudoun Valley senior John Yoxthimer as Honorable Mention all-state. See the full selections:

Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls' Mihailovich Named Region II D4 Player of the Year, Hawes is Coach of the Year

(Feb. 28, 2011) - Back-to-back champion Potomac Falls High School swept the Region II boys basketball Division 4 top honors with senior Lukas Mihailovich the Player of the Year and Jeff Hawes named Coach of the Year.

Potomac Falls junior Greg Graves and Broad Run sophomore Nigel Johnson was named first team and a pair of local juniors -- Briar Woods' Myles Tate and Woodgrove's Brad Gilson -- were named second team.

Boys Basketball: A True Myles-tone as Briar Woods' Tate Reaches 1,000 Career Points in Less Than Three Seasons

Ashburn (Feb. 1, 2011) - Briar Woods High School junior Myles Tate broke the 1,000-point career scoring mark Monday night in the Falcons 71-64 win over Park View. Tate had 24 points in the win to reach 1,002 career points and keep the Falcons firmly in third place in the Dulles District race behind leaders Potomac Falls and Broad Run.

"I am lucky to have a player like Myles who is blessed with the talent that he possesses," said Briar Woods coach Mike Benson. "Throughout the last three years, he has grown tremendously as a player and a leader. He does not only score points for our team, he is a strong leader and a role model for kids."

Benson continued: "He has led this team at the toughest position on the floor, point guard. There aren't many point guards who also score as many points as Myles and contribute on the defensive end of the floor. Every year since he has been at the helm of this program, we have improved along with him. I am looking forward to having him another year to set more records at Briar Woods."

The Falcons are 9-3 in Dulles District play, two games behind Broad Run (9-1) in the loss column, with four contests to play for BWoods and six to play for the Spartans. Potomac Falls is 12-0 with four to go.

On the girls side, Loudoun County is 11-1 with four to play, one game ahead of Freedom (10-2).
