Wrestling: The Takedown Blog! VivaLoudoun and Cheers Sports Valley Duals Wrap-up

(Feb. 2, 2011) - When you have 14 teams wrestling on six mats spread out over three rooms at Loudoun Valley High School it takes some time to collect all the details but we put the call out to the coaches at the VivaLoudoun and Cheers Sports Valley Duals to give us their highlights and here are the responses:

Westfield Wrap-up
OUTSTANDING WRESTLER:

Brett Campbell – 112 lbs.

Brett had a great 2 days, finishing with and 8-0 record with 5 pins and 3 decisions over some tough, ranked wrestlers from Potomac Falls, Urbana, and Forest Park. Brett gave up a total of 2 points in his 8 matches, and currently has a 43-5 season record.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Our team performed well throughout the weekend The dual with Forest Park was a real thriller, and we started strong and finished even better. One of the crucial matches in that dual was the 140 lbs. bout between Beau Donahue and Kingett of Forest Part. Donahue was down 8-0 at one point and came back and won the match 13-10. Campbell beating Forest Park’s Trumpower at the buzzer at 112 lbs. was also a big match at the start of the dual.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES:

Campbell, Donahue and 189 lbs. Brian Bentz all finished the duals at 8-0. Frank Aiello at 135 lbs. finished at 7-0, while 8 other wrestlers finished the 2 days with only 1 loss.

Potomac Falls Wrap-up
The coaching staff chose Batchka Zulkhuu as our Most Valuable Wrestler because he went 8-0 on the weekend, recording six pins, one major decision, and one decision. One of his wins included defeating the number four ranked wrestler in the state at AAA from Forrest Park. He is wrestling at a very high level right now, and he is a leader on and off the wrestling mat.

Although our record on the weekend doesn't show it, the team wrestled fairly well against some tough competition. I'd hate to name some wrestlers and not the others. Every single wrestler contributed on the weekend. Some of them contributed by pinning when we needed pins, and some by staying off their backs when we couldn't give up six to the other team. This tournament features some of the Washington D.C. area's toughest wrestling competition, and I was proud of how our guys responded after some of the tough losses we had.

Heritage Wrap-up
I wish I could give you more, but this is a rebuilding year for us. Most of our team are first year wrestlers. We have a solid group of freshman and I think they will do very well next year. Unfortunately, we didn't win any matches as a team; we had to forfeit 6 weight classes due to injury and illness. We did have some individual success, Matt Holton (5-3) and John Averys (6-2) are two experienced seniors. They both wrestled well, but more importantly they lead by example, which is what our younger wrestlers need.

Freedom Wrap-up
We selected Patrick Haggerty, because despite the fact he is one of the smallest 189lbers in the state of Virginia, he shows courage and intensity every time he hits the mat. Patrick went 5-1 on the weekend, and had key victories in our very close wins against Urbana, Osbourn, Cosby, and Reservoir. Not one wrestler on my team wrestled with more pressure on his back this weekend, and no wrestler on my team shined brighter.

Sean Gaetani(130) went 3-0 on the weekend, he missed day two due to SAT's. He won a key victory over the #5 ranked 125lber in AAA, who bumped up to wrestle him.

DaQuante Timbers pinned two of the top 7 ranked heavyweights in Virginia AAA this year, at the Valley Duals. He pinned #5 Ranked Tyler Deleon of Westfield before he pinned #7 Ranked James Vawter of Forest Park. His only loss was a spirited affair with the number 1 ranked Heavyweight in the State of Maryland. Timbers was down one in the second period when he threw the Reservoir wrestler to his back, but he then rolled Timbers through to his back and pinned him.

Tyler Young(152) Went 6-1 on the weekend with his only loss being a 4-1 decision to Forest Park's #6 Ranked Lucas Rider.

Loudoun Valley Wrap-up
It went real well and there was some great match ups.

Oliver Hilgartner was our MVW. He went 8-0 and as always provided leadership by example for the rest of our team. He pinned 6 of his 8 kids and tech falled/ majored the others. Boy are we gonna miss him after this year. He's going to Va Tech and has been accepted to the engineering cadet program already.

Clay Wade (160) and Josh Cassada (145) both went 7-1 and have showed some real signs of reaching there potential here at the end of the season. Josh is a tough little sophmore with a bright future and Clay Wade returns to the sport after two years off , but he's a great athlete/ competitor

David Garvis (171), whom has been the teams solid anchor throughout the season went 6-2. His loses were to Va. state runner up from Cosby HS and Md. State champ from Resevoir HS. Both loses by 3-4 points and great tests for a kid that's won 2 tournaments and been to The finals of two others this season.

Andrew Taylor (152) was 5-3 and lifted the team with his blue collar/ hard working style of wrestling to tighten up or secure wins in several matches.

Josh Hawk (125) went 5-3, Timm Gaetke-189 (3-5) and Jesse Powell (140) 3-5, wrestled well in a few big matches for the team, but also learned that they need to be more aggressive on their feet and move more with hand control from the bottom.

Freshman, Andrew Harrington(112) 3-5, Marcus Oden (119 3-5, Joey Bogash (215), as well as, senior 285 Dylan Faciolo keep improving each week and look to round into form for the Cedar Run District tournament in two weeks.

Forest Park Wrap-up
Forest Park finished 7-1 with a loss to Westfields. We had several wrestlers step up this weekend. Lucas Rider (152) went undefeated and pinned the #1 AAA wrestler in the state from Westfields. Dennis Gustafson (119) also went undefeated winning all of his matches by at least a major decision. Patrick Budd (160) got our outstanding wrestler award, winning all of his matches by at least a major.
