Boys Basketball: Piling up the Points in Purcellville! Valley's Yoxthimer Sets School Scoring Mark and Headed for Milestones; Woodgrov'es Gilson One of Tops in Metro Area Scoring Average

(Feb. 8, 2011) - They have been piling up the points in Purcellville this season as Loudoun Valley High School junior John Yoxthimer, well on his way to becoming the school's first ever 1,000-point/500-rebound player, set the school's single-game scoring mark with 49 points Friday in a win over Oakdale, and Woodgrove High School junior Brad Gilson is No. 3 in the Washington Post's Metro Area scoring with an average of 25.2 points per game.

Gilson at 6-foot-5 opened the season on a tear, scoring 37 against Brentsville and 36 against Manassas Park and he has scored in double figures in every game this season with 42 points against fellow new school Tuscarora.

Yoxthimer's 49-point gem Friday in the 84-73 win broke a Viking school record that had stood for 23 years -- Chris Leonard's 42 point performance in 1988.

"Not sure he will catch Chris Leonard for career points of 1,585 but he will be close," said Loudoun Valley coach Chad Dawson. "But he should definitely eclipse 1,000 points which will make him the 1st 1,000 point and 500 rebounder in our 50 years of Loudoun Valley basketball."

First team all-Cedar Run District as a sophomore, Yoxthimer has scored 395 points and grabbed 174 rebounds this season to give him 768 career points and 401 total rebounds. The school records for rebounds is 457 held by Charles Warrnr, who played in the 1970s.

Look for both Gilson and Yoxthimer to celebrate 1,000-point milestones next season and for Yoxthimer to become the Vikings all-time career leading rebounder.
