Basketball: Briar Woods Sweeps Broad Run to Improve the Falcons Playoff Picture

Ashburn (Feb. 8, 2011) - As teams jockey for playoff position in the final week of the regular season the Briar Woods High School boys and girls teams made the first bold Dulles District move as they swept rival Broad Run on Monday.

Myles Tate scored 29 points to lead the Briar Woods boys to 78-65 win at Broad Run. It was just the Spartans (11-3 in district, 17-3 overall) third lose on the season and it propelled the Falcons (11-3, 13-7) into a tie with Broad Run for the second seed in the Dulles District. The Falcons finish off the regular season with Potomac Falls (14-0, 19-1) and a win over the Panthers would give Briar Woods a tiebreaker edge over Broad Run should they tie.

Potomac Falls still has two games to play but the Panthers have added another regular season Dulles District title to their glowing resume under coach Jeff Hawes.

On the girls side, Briar Woods beat Broad Run in Brambleton, 49-38, to move the Falcons (8-6, 11-9) into a tie for third place with Potomac Falls (8-6, 9-11) while Broad Run 6-8, 9-11) dropped back and is now fighting off Park View (6-9, 8-12) and Woodgrove (5-8, 7-12) for the No. 5 seed.

Brittany Gilbert led the Falcons with 15 points and Jillian Olson had 10. Gilbert also added seven steals while Ashley Adams led BWoods on the boards with eight rebounds. Sophomore Alyssa Cabellos led the Spartans with a season-high 16 points.

In the boys game, despite Tate scoring 29, the Falcons had three other players in double figures with Yves Kouame (13), Matt Rolin (10) and Curtis Calder (10) all having good nights. Corey Faciane added to the depth with nine points. Calder had a double-double with 13 rebounds and Rolin just missed it as well with eight rebounds.

Broad Run struggled to find balance as Nigel Johnson scored 24 and Taylor Johnson added 12 for more than half of the Spartans total points.
