Girls Basketball: Loudoun County Clinches Share of Dulles Title; SB Fails to Clinch Liberty Title; Heritage Claims 2nd in Cedar Run

(Feb. 9, 2011) - The final week of the girls basketball season saw some teams clinching at least a share of district titles and others failing to do so as Loudoun County wrapped up part of the Dulles District title with a big win Tuesday over Dominion and Stone Bridge failed to get part of the Liberty District banner after falling to McLean in overtime on Senior Night.

The good new for Stone Bridge is that Liberty District co-leader Fairfax also stumbled on Tuesday, losing to South Lakes, so both teams are 10-3 in district with one game remaining.

Loudoun County can win the Dulles title outright with a win Friday against Woodgrove, while Freedom still has hopes of tying the Raiders if they can beat Woodgrove on Thursday and then have the Wolverines upset the Raiders the next night.

In the Cedar Run it is likely that two local teams will play for a Northwest Region tournament spot in a week as Heritage has clinched the No. 2 seed behind powerhouse Stonewall Jackson and the Pride look to host Loudoun Valley next week in a district semifinal in Leesburg.

Dulles District Girls Basketball Playoff Picture

• Louodoun County (14-1) has at least a share of the district title and can win it outright on Friday with a victory over Woodgrove. Freedom (13-2) can force a one-game playoff with a win over Woodgrove Thursday and a Raider loss on Friday.
• Briar Woods (9-6) and Potomac Falls (9-6) are tied for the No. 3 seed and will play each other on Friday with winning earning it and the loser falling to No. 4
• Broad Run (6-9) and Park View (6-9) are tied for the No. 5 spot with Woodgrove (5-9) a half game back.. Broad Run finishes with Dominion and Park View plays Tuscarora. If the two teams tie, Broad Run would get the higher seed based on a season sweep over the Patriots. Woodgrove has a tough back-to-back finish with Freedom and Loudoun County.
• Tuscarora (3-12) holds onto the eighth and final spot with Dominion (2-13) needing a win over Broad Run and a Huskies loss to force a playoff for the final spot.

Cedar Run District Girls Basketball Playoff Picture

• Stonewall Jackson (6-0) has clinched the regular-season title, tournament top seed and bid to Northwest Region tournament
• Heritage (4-3) is the No. 2 seed as Valley (3-4) can't catch the Pride as Heritage swept the season series with the Vikes.
• Battlefield (2-5) and Osbourn (2-5) are tied for the fourth and final spot with Battlefield having to play top-seed Stonewall to finish and Osbourn takes on Heritage. If they remain tied, then a one-game playoff would be held for the No. 4 spot.

Liberty District Girls Basketball Playoff Picture

• Stone Bridge (10-3) and Fairfax (10-3) are tied with one game left for the regular-season title. The Bulldogs finish with Marshall while Fairfax faces a McLean team that the Rebels lost and that beat SB on Tuesday.
• Madison (9-4) could wind up in a 3-way tie for first if the Warhawks win and both leaders fall.  Madison finishes with TJ.
• McLean (8-5) is one game behind Madison
• South Lakes (6-7) is currently No. 5 with Marshall (5-8) just one game behind.
• Langley (3-10) will be the No. 7 seed and TJ (1-12) the No. 8 seed.
