News: Loudoun County Wins Dulles District Forensics Tournament

(Feb. 11, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School forensics team won the Dulles District Forensics Tournament on Saturday, February 5th, placing in 13 of the 16 contests they entered.

The Raiders brought home the district trophy for the 10th time in 11 years.


Forensics is a tournament consisting of 10 different public speaking contests, ranging from traditional speaking, such as Original Oratory, to interpretive events, such as Prose and Poetry, to interpretive/acting categories, such as Dramatic and Duo Interpretation. Forensics is also the oldest interscholastic competition, be it academic or sports-related, governed by the Virginia High School League. It began in 1913.

Advancing to the Region II Tournament at Charlottesville High School February 26 will be:
• Alecia Moore, first place, and Brielle Davis, third place, in Poetry
• Olivia Lawhorne, second place, and Carly Machlan, third place, in Prose
• Bobby McCurdy, third place, in Original Oratory
• Nate Ritsema, first place, and Sydney Breithaupt, third place, in Humorous Interpretation
• Bronwen Hale and Kathleen Boyle, first place, and Jack Notar and Jess DeBoard, second place, in Humorous Duo
• Luke Kalwarski and Caleb Hoehner, second place, in Serious Duo
• Rachel Veal, first place, and Caroline McCarry, second place, in Storytelling

Strong performances also were turned in by teams from Broad Run, Dominion and Freedom high schools, which finished in a three-way tie for second place.

The Raider Forensics Team is coached by Loudoun County High School drama teacher John Wells.
