(May 20, 2010) - Back in early April it was all so easy to think that the Broad Run High School girls lacrosse team, after a four-year unbeaten run through the Dulles District, was finally in rebuilding mode. After all the Spartans, under first-year coach Erin Stacy, dropped three straight to start against tough non-district foes, all the losses by double digits.
Then up-and-coming George Mason ended Broad Run's 44-game unbeaten streak against Dulles foes with a 12-11 win to put Broad Run 0-4. End of story? Hardly as Broad Run regrouped and hasn't lost since, reeling off 11 consecutive victories, including a 15-11 win over George Mason on Wednesday in the Dulles District finals in Falls Church.
For Broad Run, the win not only avenged the earlier loss to the Mustangs, but gave the Spartans a five-peat of tournament titles.
Nina Dunay (three goals, two assists) and Taylor Forman (four goals, one assist) led the Spartan attack that saw seven players score including Casey Davidson (2 goals), Kailey Phillips (2 goals), Heidi Smith (2 goals), Rachel Duff (one goal) and Mary Durham (one goal).
Nicolle Bradford had 11 saves in goal for Broad Run.

Dulles District Girls Lacrosse Third Place Game: Loudoun County 14, Freedom 13
The Loudoun County High School girls lacrosse team earned a regional tournament bid by edging Freedom, 14-13, in the Dulles District third place game Wednesday at George Mason High School.
Raider coach Courtney Wilhelm called the contest: "A gut-wrenching, heart-pounding, down to the last second battle."
Continued Wilhelm: "The Lady Raiders dug deep and played hard from beginning to end."
Lighting up the scoreboard for the Raiders were seniors Hannah Young with one goal and Christine Rihn with one goal and one assist, junior Sydney Hewartson with four goals and two assists, sophomore Rachel Solis with seven goals and four assists and freshman Haley Knudsen with one goal and one assist.
Said Wilhelm: "The attack was on fire, fighting oppressive checks with fast breaks and scoring drives straight to the goal! Down on the defensive side, an impressive game was played. Stopping passes and dishing out a straight denial to the goal were juniors Lesya Chopivsky, Caila Cummings, Jaci Shepherd, and Kasey Fletcher, sophomore Shannon Rose and freshman Haley Knudsen."
Starring in goal for County was sophomore Jessie Joseph who dominated her previous personal best to make an amazing 26 saves.
