Liberty District: Stone Bridge Softball Clinches Regional Bid, Girls Soccer Rolls into Finals; Boys Soccer Falls to McLean, 1-0

(May 20, 2010) - The Stone Bridge High School softball and girls soccer team's both turned in 4-0 victories Wednesday in Liberty District tournament action. The win for the Bulldog softball team over Langley earned the Bulldogs a trip to Friday's semifinals against McLean and a bid to the regional tournament.

The girls Bulldog soccer team remains unbeaten on the season at 13-0-2 after its win at Fairfax. The Bulldogs move into the district title game Friday against Madison. Both the softball semifinals and soccer finals are at McLean.

The Bulldog boys soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at home to McLean in the semifinals. The teams falls to 12-3-0 and will travel next week in the first round of the regional playoffs.

Liberty District Girls Soccer Semifinal: Stone Bridge 4, Fairfax 0
The Bulldogs came out strong scoring three goals in the first half. Murielle Tiernan had two goals with assists coming from Ashley Herndon and Mallory Corpe. Emily Fredrikson scored in the first half from a free kick 40 yards out that soared over the keeper's head.

Jennifer Skogerboe scored the loan goal of the second half off a pass from Carson Cyphers. Stone Bridge's goalkeeper Julia Harmison had four saves in her eighth shutout of the season.

Liberty District Boys Soccer Semifinal: McLean 1, Stone Bridge 0
For the second time this season, Stone Bridge fell to McLean. The Bulldogs had several chances to equalize hitting the post three times and dominated McLean with 7-0 on corner kicks and out-shooting the Highlanders, 11-6, but could not break through.

McLean scored the game's lone goal on a header by Matt Janssen in the 27th minute of the game after a ball played into the right flank was argued offsides by SB but the assistant's flag stayed down and a ball played in was finished by Janssen.

In the 34th minute, Stone Bridge's Edgey Levy sent a long ball in that sailed over the keeper's head and defleted away off the left crossbar. A minute later, Michael Herndon collected a loose ball for Stone Bridge in the 18 and blasted a shot off the left crossbar.

In the second half, a dangerous ball played in by Stone Bridge in the 61st minute was cleared by a Highlander defender inside his six, straight towards the goal but caught the right crossbar and went out of play.

The game was played on a slick field from recent rain and when players weren't slipping on the turf, they were helping each other to the ground as the two teams combined for 23 fouls.
