Soccer: Stone Bridge Girls Romp into Regional Quarterfinals, SB Boys Survive Double OT Scare

(May 26, 2010) - Both the Stone Bridge High School girls and boys soccer teams advanced to the AAA Northern Region quarterfinals with first round wins Tuesday night but they took two very different routes. While the Bulldog girls remained unbeaten on the season with a 9-0 romp at home over J.E.B. Stuart, the Bulldog boys survived a scare Stuart, winning dramatically, 2-1, on senior Clay Brothers' "golden goal" in double overtime.

The Stone Bridge girls, now 15-0-2 on the season, host Lee Thursday at 7 p.m. The Stone Bridge boys, now 13-3-0, will face Lake Braddock at 7 p.m. in a game that has been shifted to South County High School because the Bruins are hosting the regional track and field meet.

The Stone Bridge boys trailed 1-0 in second half when senior Edgy Levy scored on a cross from senior Cooper Sousa. Stuart played most of the second half and all of overtime down two players after two straight red card violations.

Despite the advantage, the Bulldogs could not go ahead and the two teams battled through a 10-minute scoreless overtime period. The game then went into sudden death and Brothers ended things with a goal on an assist from junior Luke Schierling with 1:17 left on the clock.

Stone Bridge out-shot Stuart, 18-7, and had 8 corner kicks to zero for the opponent.

In the girls game, the Bulldogs defense earned its 10th shutout of the season with keeper Julia Harmison recording two saves for the night. Ashley Herndon and Erin Leonard led the Bulldog offense with each having two goals and an assist. Murielle Tiernan, Jennifer Skogerboe, Carson Cyphers, Emily Fredrikson, and Imani Ervins each had a goal as well. Emily Lung had three assists, Melissa Rodriguez, Ervins, Skogerboe, and Harmison each added an assist as well.
