Softball: Briar Woods Caps Undefeated Dulles District Season with Win Over Broad Run

Ashburn (May 16, 2010) - Briar Woods High School softball capped a perfect regular-season run through the Dulles District by rallying for a 3-2 win over Broad Run on Senior Night Friday in a game that was delayed an hour and a half by lightning.

With the victory, the Falcons improved to 16-2 overall and 12-0 in the Dulles District, while the Spartans fell to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the district.

Broad Run scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first behind a passed ball on a third strike, two singles and two errors, but the Falcons answered immediately in the bottom of the inning.

Senior Holly Dominguez led off with a bloop single just beyond the reach of the shortstop, and junior Kristina Karagiorgis sacrificed Dominguez to second. The Spartans elected to intentionally walk sophomore Macy Jones, and after a ground out by senior Kate Fowler moved both runners up, junior Kasey Ball delivered a clutch two-run single to pull the Falcons even.

Both teams then settled in for three consecutive scoreless innings.

Falcon freshman Lynn Brantley walked to start the second and moved to second on a sacrifice by senior Hayley Olson, but Briar Woods was unable to capitalize.

Broad Run went down in order in the second and third innings before threatening in the fourth. Two walks put runners on first and second with one out. However, Falcon junior catcher Jillian Olson made a bobbling catch of a foul bunt attempt, and Jones, who came on in relief to start the third, used a strikeout to get out of the jam.

Olson made another outstanding defensive play in the top of the fifth to thwart another Spartan scoring chance.

With a runner on first after a leadoff single, Spartan leadoff hitter Maggie Betz popped up a bunt attempt just out in front of the plate.
Olson dove out from behind the plate and made the catch inches above the ground, and she then quickly got to her feet and threw to first to double up the runner. Jones then finished the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fifth, Falcon junior Alex Fierszt beat out an infield single to third and moved to second on a sacrifice by Dominguez.
Lightning was then seen in the distance, and several additional lightning sightings led to the game’s being delayed 1:30 before play resumed at 8:39 p.m.

Karagiorgis, who held a 1-0 count when play was suspended, returned to the batter’s box after the delay and singled off the glove of Spartan first baseman Jenn Soroka that allowed Fierszt to move to third. Jones followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center that plated Fierszt with what would be the winning run.

Jones took care of the rest, striking out the final seven Spartan hitters to seal the victory. Jones allowed just one hit while striking out 10 over the final five innings.

Fowler started for the Falcons and gave up two hits and two unearned runs with three strikeouts over the first two innings.

The Falcons outhit the Spartans 8-3, with Brantley and Fierszt leading the way with two hits each.

Briar Woods returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Fauquier at 6 p.m. Broad Run wraps up the regular season on Tuesday with a district game at Loudoun County.
