Lacrosse: Stone Bridge Boys and Girls Advance to Northern Region Quarterfinals; Valley Girls and Boys Roll into Cedar Run District Title Game

(May 19, 2010) - Four of the area's top lacrosse teams did Tuesday night what have they have been doing most of the season -- winning. The Stone Bridge High School boys and girls came away with road wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the Northern Region tournament and the Loudoun Valley High School boys and girls both won big to advance to the Cedar Run District finals.

The Stone Bridge boys (10-4) doubled up on Yorktown, 15-7, while the Bulldog girls (13-4) shut down Hayfield, 14-2. The Loudoun Valley boys (13-2) beat Stonewall Jackson, 14-2, while the Viking girls (13-2) took care of Heritage, 21-1.

The Stone Bridge boys and girls travel to Patriot District champion and former Liberty District foe Woodson for a quarterfinal doubleheader Thursday with the girls at 5 p.m. and boys at 7 p.m. The match-ups should be even according to laxpower.com rankings as the SB boys are ranked No. 13 in the state with Woodson at No. 12. On the girls side, SB is ranked No. 7 with Woodson at No. 10.

The Viking boys and girls will host the finals in a doubleheader Friday in Purcellville. Both teams must wait until tonight to find out their opponent as the Heritage boys travel to Battlefield and the Osbourn girls also play at Battlefield in two semifinals postponed a day due to weather.

Northern Region Boys Lacrosse First Round: Stone Bridge 15, Yorktown 7
Senior attack Derek Maltz led the Bulldogs with five goals and three assists and his freshman brother, Dylan Maltz, added four goals and three assists.

Also for SB, junior attack JP Giroux added three goals and an assist. SB goalie, sophomore Jesse Southward registered 11 saves.

Northern Region Girls Lacrosse First Round: Stone Bridge 14, Hayfield 2
Senior Lauren Giusti led Stone Bridge with six goals and an assist and Kayla Sleece added two goals and three assists while Brittany Worstell score four times.

Also for SB: Holly Kramer scored, Rachael Pascale had a goal and an assist, and Danielle Powell,
Mary Olson, and Elizabeth Bishop all had assists. In goal, Coral Ryan had seven saves for the Bulldogs.
