Loudoun County's Julie Strange and Tommy Curtin won individual titles.
The top four teams advanced to the Region II meet which will be held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. (girls) and 2:45 p.m. (boys).
On the girls side Thursday, regular-season champion Loudoun County was nipped by Potomac Falls, 46-38, for the Panthers third straight title and fifth in nine years. Briar Woods (69 points) and Dominion (84) also advanced to Region II.
Individually the race featured champions from the past three years in PF's Christina Lee (2006, 2007) and LC's Julie Strange (2008).
"I was extremely nervous today. Christina and I always have really good races with each other," said Strange.
While Strange said that Lee "killed me on the roller coaster", the hilly middle portion of the tough course, at the end it was Strange coming home alone as she finished 31 seconds ahead of Lee, 19:53 to 20:24.
Potomac Falls had suffered a blow when the Panthers No. 1 runner from 2008 -- a season when Lee sat out due to injury -- decided not to come out this season but senior Natalie Wright stepped up and finished third Thursday with a 20:34. Sophomore Koeley Brady's 20:56 gave PF three runners in the top five.
The Panthers scoring was rounded out by freshman Ariana Staffen (21:37) in 13th and junior Rachel Hagen (21:51) in 15th.
Loudoun County had three runners in the top 15 with sophomore Kathryn Eder (21:18) in 7th and sophomore Emily Siefert (21:44) in 14th. Sophomore Shelby Romback (22:26) rounded out the LC scoring in 20th.
Briar Woods was led by sophomore Madi Horner (21:11), junior Giana Leone (21:21) and freshman Jackie Deffer (21:24) who finished 6-8-9. Dominion's top runners were senior Buffy Misanin (21:29) and junior Barbar Rion (21:35) in 10th and 12th.
Freedom junior Vicotria Boone (21:32) also moves on to regionals, in addition to the runners from the top four teams, with her 11th place finish.
On the boys side it appeared after last year's super senior class took Potomac Falls all the way to the podium at AA states, that this might be the year that the rest of the district could break the stranglehold that the Panthers had on it ... winning each and every title since the district started in 2001.
Despite the loss of three-time district champion Josh Hardin and four-year standout Ryan Hagen, the Panthers ran away with their ninth straight title on Thursday.
"I was just lucky that I had seniors that stuck with the program," said Potomac Falls coach Dolph Null. "We felt that if we ran as a team this year then we didn't need a frontrunner."
Potomac Falls showed just how strong the purple pack can be as they had two runners in the top five -- junior Juan Campos (17:29) 3rd and senior Michael Volaric (17:36) in fifth and then the rest of the team came striding across the finish line ... five runners in a 10 second span to finish as a bunch in places 7th thru 11th.
That group -- junior Nichoas Mogensen (17:51), senior Christopher Johnson (17:54), senior Alvaro Morales (17:57), junior Patrick Wilson (17:58) and junior Connor Wilson (18:01) -- powered PF to a 32-point finish, some 26 points ahead of runner-up Loudoun County (58).
The Raiders were paced by individual champion, junior Tommy Curtin, who finished at 16:58 to win the race by 12 seconds of Dominion junior J.T. Duke (17:10).
Curtin's incredible offseason workouts chainsawed some 90 seconds off his best time from his sophomore year and he did it all for a t-shirt!
"Coach (Campbell) said if we ran over the summer, 500 miles in three months time, then we would get t-shirts," said Curtin who estimates that he logged at least 600 miles to earn the swag.
Joining Curtin for LC were sophomore Austin Talbot (17:36) in 4th, junior Tanner Tibbits (18:07) in 13th and sophomore Josh Showalter (18:14) in 16th. Another sophomore, Matt Gambogi (18:53), rounded out the scoring and gives hopes to LC next year as they potentially have their entire squad back.
Dominion (76 points), the surprise squad of 2008 with a run at states, was paced to third place by Duke and senior Nick Sharp (18:06) in 12th. Also headed to the Region II meet: Freedom, which just beat out Broad Run for the final spot by three points, 117 to 120. Briar Woods wasn't far behind at 129.
Freedom's top runners were Thorpe Lichtenburg (17:44) in 6th and Kyle Thornburg (18:08) in 14th.
Briar Woods will send a lone runner onto regionals with senior Zach Deaton (18:11) taking 15th place.
