Boys Lacrosse: Loudoun County Names Dave Colangelo as New Varsity Coach

Leesburg (Aug. 23, 2012) - Loudoun County High School announced that Dave Colangelo has been approved as the Raiders new varsity boys lacrosse head coach.

Colangeo comes to Loudoun County with an extensive lacrosse background. A native of Syracuse NY where he played high school lacrosse, he then attended Randolph Macon College where he was a 4-year letterman on defense.

Girls Soccer: Park View Names Broad Run Assistant Davorin Husadzinovic as New Varsity Head Coach; 2-Time State Champ Coach Phil Rosenthal Named Assist.

Sterling (Aug. 23, 2012) - Park View High School has recently named former Patriot standout and professional soccer player Davorin Husadzinovic as it's new varsity girls soccer coach. He joins the Patriots staff from Broad Run High School, where he was an assistant in the boy's soccer program. 

Davorin is originally from Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina where he lived the first seven years of his life. He started playing soccer for the local club FC Conthey at the age of seven. In December of 1998, Davorin's family moved to Washington, DC where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and played soccer there for three years. At Wilson HS his teams were city champions two times in 2000 and 2002. 

In the summer of 2002 his family moved to Sterling, VA and he attended Park View High School for his senior year of High School. In one year at Park View his teams were ranked in the top 10 in the Washington Post, and Davorin was on the all-met selection as well as 1st team all-district, 1st team all-region and 2nd team all-state. 

News: New LCPS Tool to Allow Parents to Access Student Grades, Assignments Online

(Aug. 20, 2012) - For the first time all Loudoun’s parents will be able to check their student’s grades and assignments online this year through a parent portal using the CLARITY system.

This application, found on the webpage for each Loudoun County public school, allows parents to view their  student’s grades and also attendance in secondary schools. By using their student’s ID number and a password assigned by Loudoun County Public Schools, parents will be able to view their student’s current information as well as information from previous marking periods.

D.C. United: Potomac Falls Grad Shanosky Earns NASL Defensive Player of the Week

(Aug. 20, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School grad Conor Shanosky has been named the North American Soccer League's Defensive Player of the Week honors while on loan with the Fort Lauderdale Strikes from D.C. United.

Shanosky had a strong outing from his midfield starting spot in a game Aug. 18 at the Puerto Rico Islanders. Shanosky has helped the Strikers to a 8-7-8 mark this season, playing in 23 games with 22 starts.

D.C. United hosts the Chicago Fire Wednesday Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at RFK Stadium.

Swim: Potomac Falls to Honor Alumnus Olympic Gold Medalist Matt McLean

(Aug. 20, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School will honor alumnus Olympic gold medalist Matt McLean on Friday August 24 during the season-opening football game.

Potomac Falls athletics department will be holding events to honor the Class of 2006 graduate who recently earned a gold medal in the London Games as part of the U.S. men’s swimming 4x200 relay.

Recognizing Matt McLean:
 • Matt will serve as the honorary game captain at the school’s season-opening football game and conduct the pregame coin toss.
 • At halftime, Matt will take a ‘victory lap’ around the Potomac Falls track and greet fans from both Liberty High and Potomac Falls High.
• Following the victory lap, Matt will meet fans in a tent at the end of the field, signing autographs, taking pictures and shaking hands.

Golf: Dominion Takes Control of Dulles District Race with Win at Cheers Invitational

(Aug. 17, 2012) - The Dominion High School golf team took a big step Tuesday towards repeating as AA Dulles District regular-season champions with a big win at the Cheers Invitational at Algonkian.

The Titans, led by Sam Stillwell's 71 and Erik Dulik's 73, shot a team score of 298 to capture the event which featured all 13 of Loudoun's public high schools. AAA Stone Bridge was runner-up with 305 as Matt Ashley shot the low round for the day at 69.

Softball: AGSL Shooting Stars 12U Black Looking to Fill Last Roster Spot

News: More Trials, Means More Jury Duty for Loudoun Residents

(Aug. 16, 2012) - A significant increase in jury trials in Loudoun County means more jury duty for residents as Clerk of the Circuit Court Gary Clemens says approximately 40,000 juror questionnaires began arriving in area mailboxes yesterday.

"€œWe are experiencing significant increases in the number of jury trials and as a result we will need more jurors to be available," said Clemens.

Golf: Briar Woods Grad Nicole Flores Wins MAPGA Junior Tour Title

(Aug. 16, 2012) - Briar Woods High School grad Nicole Flores of Brambleton won the 2012 Middle Atlantic Professional Golfers’ Association (MAPGA) Junior Tour Championship in the girls' 15-18 age group.

Flores shot a 6 over par 150 to win the 36 hole championship by 4 strokes over her nearest competitor. The tournament was played August 9 and 10 on the challenging Woods Course at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Boys Lacrosse: Fall Instructional Clinics Set

(Aug. 16, 2012) - Blue Ridge Lacrosse will host fall instructional clinics, directed by Woodgrove High School head coach Jeff Lewandowski, for boys ages 6 to 15. For registration and more information visit www.blueridgelacrosse.com.

The clinics will run every Sunday from Sept. 16 thru Oct. 14 at the Foxcroft School in Middleburg. Clinic staff will include high school coaches and current players from the Northern Virginia area.

Golf: Battlefield and Patriot Split Cedar Run District Mini Tournaments

(Aug. 16, 2012) - Battlefield High School and Patriot High School split Cedar Run District mini tournaments last week at Dominion Valley and 1757 Club. Broad Run was third and Freedom was fourth at both events.

At 1757, the Spartans were led by Jake Wohlgemuth's 76 with Desiree Razon shooting 78 and Mitch Pittman 79. Broad Run was just five strokes behind Battlefield and seven off Patriot's winning 311 team score. Freedom's Duncan Walter shot 79 at 1757.

News: VHSL Takes Another Step on Road to Overhaul of Classification and Playoff System

(Aug. 16, 2012) - The Virginia High School League's R&R Committee and Ad Hoc Conference Committee met last week to take action on requests received from member schools in regards to their district and conference assignments in the proposed 2013-15 two-year cycle.

There was no movement for any Loudoun-based schools from the proposed plan, which switches Virginia basically from a 3-classification model to six classifications for almost all sports. 

If passed, Loudoun schools would be place in the following districts and conferences under the revamped playoff system:

For regular-season play

Liberty District: Stone Bridge with Fairfax, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes, TJ

Dulles District: Champe, Dominion, Heritage, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Park View, Woodgrove

Potomac District: Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom, Potomac Falls, Tuscarora

For postseason play (all teams advance to conference tournaments)
5A North: Conference 14: Briar Woods, Broad Run, Freedom, Potomac Falls, Stone Bridge, Tuscarora
4A North Conference 21: Dominion, Heritage, Loudoun County, Park View, Woodgrove with Handley, James Wood, Millbrook and Sherando.

Baseball: Woodgrove Grad Scott Van Steelant to Play at Shenandoah University

Purcellville (Aug. 16, 2012) - Woodgrove High School recent grad Scott Van Steelant will continue his academic and baseball career at NCAA Division III powerhouse Shenandoah University.

Van Stelant, a first team all region first baseman, will compete for playing time at Shenandoah at both first base and on the pitching mound.

Shenandoah University, coached by Kevin Anderson, has been to the D3 College World Series twice in the last four years. The SU preseason roster also includes Loudoun Valley grad Andrew Creamer (JR 1B), Heritage grad Andre Zarobila (JR LHP), and home schooled incoming freshman Billy Arens from Purcellville.

News: 2012 PRCS Fall Activity Guide Available

(Aug. 15, 2012) - The PRCS 2012 Fall Activity Guide is available online at loudoun.gov/prcs . The fall issue is mailed to all Loudoun residents directly from the post office. Copies areeee available at PRCS centers and parks (and county libraries).. Registration for senior activities and trips began today. General registration begins tomorrow, August 16.

Baseball: Briar Woods Grad Mat Irish to Play at UVA-Wise

(Aug. 15, 2012) - Recent Briar Woods High School third basemen/pitcher Mat Irish signed a scholarship last month to play this coming year at NAIA program UVA-Wise.

Irish is one of the first Falcons in the baseball program to sign a letter of intent to play college baseball. He was a first team all-Dulles District selection in 2012 at third base.

Boys Basketball: Loudoun Valley JR Paul Rowley Picks Up Offer from Mount St. Mary's

(Aug. 13, 2012) - Loudoun Valley High School junior Paul Rowley, a 6-foot-7 inside-outside player who can play point guard, has picked up his first college offer as new Mount St. Mary's coach Jamion Christian has put the Viking on The Mount's recruiting radar.

Rowley picked up the offer according to Loudoun Valley coach Chad Dawson after a great summer season that included invites to the Mount St. Mary's elite camp as well as West Virginia University's elite camp.

"He deserves it as he has worked real hard," said Dawson. "Paul is very versatile, very athletic and great student of the game."

Christian, a 2004 graduate of Mount St. Mary's and just 30, was named head coach in March. He was an assistant at VCU where he helped the Rams with their 2012 NCAA tournament run. Prior to that he spent three years at William & Mary. Potomac Falls grad Greg Graves is a freshman on The Mount's 2012-13 roster.

Rowley is expected to pick up the scoring role in the winter of graduated John Yoxthimer. Dawson says that Rowley's combination of height and ball handling skills creates match-up problems for opposing teams.

Golf: Tuscarora Takes Title at Curly Licklider

(Aug. 11, 2012) - Tuscarora High School wonw the 11th annual Curly Licklider Golf Tournament at Shenandoa Valley golf club on Aug. 3

The Huskies were led by junior Caleb Keel posting an overall low score of 110 for 27 holes, good enough to finish 4th overall of a field of 144 golfers. The tourney included 24 high schools from four different counties.

Golf: Pairings Set for Tuesday's Cheers Sports Invitational

(Aug. 11, 2012) - The pairings are set for Tuesday's Cheers Sports Invitational at Algonkian Golf Course. The tournament not only functions as the Dulles District's second mini tournament of the season but the 13-school event also features Loudoun's three AAA schools making it Loudoun's unofficial championship event.

Loudoun Valley captured the first mini tournament. The two mini tournaments along with dual meets determine the Dulles District's regular-season champion with each weighted one-third.

Ashburn (Aug. 11, 2012) - Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic’s live coverage of the Washington Redskins’ preseason game at Buffalo on Thursday, Aug. 9, was the highest-rated program in network history (since April 2001), earning an average household rating of 9.15 in the Washington, D.C., television market from 7-10:15 p.m. The record household rating equates to an average Washington-area audience of approximately 216,000 households and 297,000 viewers. 

Boys Basketball: It's Official - High-Scoring Nigel Johnson Transfers from Broad Run

(Aug. 8,  2012) - Broad Run High School boys basketball coach John Costello said Tuesday that his high-scoring senior Nigel Johnson has officially informed him of his transfer to private power Riverdale Baptist in Maryland.

"I was informed by Nigel and his parents that he will be leaving Broad Run to play a national schedule his senior year in a very competitive league, in order to better prepare him for play at the college level," said Costello. "Although he will be greatly missed, I understand and respect their decision. As a coach, there is nothing more important to me than the relationship with my players. Nigel is a terrific kid from a wonderful family."

Johnson, who averaged nearly 30 points a game including an all-time Loudoun single-game record 55 points against Osbourn, already holds scholarship offers from George Washington, American, Bucknell, Cornell, Holy Cross, Northeastern, William and Mary and UNC-Greensboro.

Girls Basketball: PSPA Rams U12 Captures Fairfax Stars Summer League Title

(Aug. 7, 2012) - The PSPA Rams U12 girls basketball team posted a 11-2 record to capture the Fairfax Stars Summer League 13-2 division.

The team featured Jaelyn Batts (Lunsford Middle School), Alexis Corras (Farmwell Station), Karlie Harmon (Mercer), Annie Johnson (home schooled), Sarah Kiel (Lunsford), Kennedy Midleton (Farmwell Station), Chyna Roberts (Farmwell Station), Erica Stanley (Lunsford), Maria Togni (Lunsford) and Natalie Villaflor (Simpson).

Sterling (Aug. 7, 2012) - The Olympics in London are not the only place where gold medals are being won. A Loudoun county girls fast pitch travel softball team, the Loudoun Storm 16U Red, coached by JJ Merchant, just completed a 32-6-1 spring/summer season by winning the 2012 Amateur Softball Association 16U National Championship Eastern title.

They also finished as the Virginia state runner-ups in both ASA and USSSA age group tournaments. The ASA National Championship tournament, which this year was held in Sterling, had teams from across the eastern and midwest United States attend in the 16U and 18U age groups.

Football: Cascades NFL Football Leagues Crowns Punt, Pass & Kick Winners
