Ashburn (Nov. 13, 2010) - Senior Marcus Harris ran for three touchdowns and 163 yards and senior Spenser Rositano came up with two big third quarter plays, a 63-yard TD reception and 45 interception return for a score, to highlight Stone Bridge High School's 55-0 shutout Friday over J.E.B. Stuart in the Northern Region Division 5 quarterfinals.
Stone Bridge (11-0) is shooting for a fifth regional title in six years. The Bulldogs will host Liberty District foe South Lakes next Friday in the regional semifinals in a rematch of the final regular season game which SB won 49-13.
Asked what the biggest challenge was Friday night, Stone Bridge head coach Mickey Thompson cited the overconfidence factor.
“Over confidence is a little bit of a problem. When you have that, you tend not to pay attention to detail,” Thompson said.
It seems the most imminent challenge for the Bulldogs isn’t facing their next opponent; it’s finding a balance in confidence. Thompson said “you’re only as good as the guy next to you is.”
In a season of huge halftime leads for Stone Bridge, the first half Friday brought "just" 20 points for the Bulldogs who were led by seniors Harris and Kyle Gouveia. In the first quarter, Harris punched in a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs.
Typical of Stuart's tall task against a Stone Bridge defense which allows just five points a game, was a second quarter impressive one-handed catch by Mahdi Ibrahim ... which yielded a 4-yard loss thanks to the Bulldog defensive pursuit.
With 2:47 left in the first half, Harris broke through the line and rushed for 40 yards until Hunter Trumps of the Raiders brought him down deep in Stuart territory. This big gain put the Bulldogs back in striking distance once again. Lining up in their jumbo package, Gouveia plowed into into the end zone from the 1 with 1:13 remaining in the half. The ensuing PAT was blocked, resulting in a 20-0 halftime Stone Bridge lead.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half to solidify the win, forcing several turnovers which put the game well out of reach for the Raiders.
Harris started the third quarter with an 8-yard run. Following that gain, Rositano cemented the impending Bulldog victory with a 63-yard TD catch from senior QB Brian Rody. Rositano wasn't finished as he then returned an interception 45 yards for a score.
By the fourth quarter, Stone Bridge was in the lead 41-0. The Bulldogs finished strong, scoring two additional touchdowns in the fourth with the first offense on the sidelines. The first score was a 5-yard run by freshman James Manning, and the second, a 2-yard run by senior Albi Selimaj.
As the players left the field to Kenny Chesney’s “The Boys of Fall”, senior Dexter Rogers said that in order to wear the Bulldog blue jersey, “you always gotta win.”
