Competitive Cheer: Briar Woods Edges Broad Run to Defend Dulles District Title

Dominion erupts with joy after clinching Regionals

(Oct. 21, 2010) - As the tension mounted Wednesday night at the awards ceremony for the Dulles District competitive cheer meet, there were really two outcomes at stake. Which two teams would claim the final two spots to the Region II meet and which of the district's top two squads -- rivals Briar Woods and Broad Run -- would claim the meet title.

Seasons would continue and others would end as Dominion was named to the coveted fourth place finish and the Titans cheerleaders and their fans jumped and screamed for joy. In other circles around the Briar Woods High School gym there were crestfallen looks as the reality set in as Loudoun County was named third place.

That left Broad Run and Briar Woods and the margin of victory was razor thin ... just 1.5 points separated the two squads and once again it was the host Falcons coming out on top as they added the meet title to their regular-season title. It was the second straight Dulles title for Briar Woods, which went on to capture the Region II and AA state titles last year.

"We are taking baby steps ... taking it one meet at a time," said Briar Woods coach Kristen Develli when asked if her experienced team can repeat all three titles in 2010.

The Falcons, helped by 14 returners from last year' squad, scored 229.5 to edge Broad Run at 228.

"The girls, when they stepped on the mats this year, were five steps ahead of where they were last year. But they haven't let it go to their heads and they have continued to work hard," said Develli.

Loudoun County took 3rd

Loudoun County scored 213 for third with Dominion 2.5 points behind at 210.5. All within 11 points of the Titans but missing a chance at Regionals were Potomac Falls (204.5), Freedom (202.5) and Woodgrove (199.5).
