Purcellville (Oct. 10, 2010) - The Woodgrove High School football team only knows how to win one way and that is with a dramatic flair. Two weeks after the school's first ever win in overtime against East Rockingham it was more final seconds tension Friday as the Wolverines stopped Geroge Mason's two-point conversion attempt with 25 seconds to play to preserve a 21-20 victory.
A pair of 67-yard TD runs by freshman Joshua Sweet and sophomore Atem Ntangtang had erased an early 6-0 George Mason advantage and given the Wolverines the 14-6 edge heading into the final quarter.
The Mustangs, out-gaining Woodgrove in the game and picking up twice as many first downs, 17-8, scored with 8:15 left and made a 2-point conversion to tie the game. Woodgrove, driving to put themselves back in the lead, fumbled in the end zones with 3:35 to go but the Wolverines recovered the ball to make it 21-14 on R.J. Warfel's extra point.
When George Mason scored in the final seconds, the visiting Mustangs went for the win instead of overtime and the Wolverines held to celebrate the school's second ever win.
Sweet finished with 90 yards on 13 carries and Ntangtang added 87 on 12 attempts. It was a ground game all around as the two teams each completed only two passes apiece.
