(Oct. 8, 2010) - The Loudoun County High School boys cross country team stunned Potomac Falls -- one of the top teams in the state and winners of nine straight Dulles District meet titles -- on Wednesday by a point and the Raiders now have a clear path to a regular-season title.
Loudoun County only needs dual meet wins over Broad Run and Tuscarora next Wednesday to finish a perfect 8-0 Dulles District regular season after Wednesday's, 27-28, win over the Panthers. The razor-thin margin of victory was only a second as defending district champion Tommy Curtin crossed the finish line first at 16:56, just a second ahead of Panther Juan Campos at 16:57.
While Potomac Falls swept the 2-4 spots, it was great pack running by the Raiders with four County athletes all with in four seconds of each other, crossing the finish line in 5th through 8th, that clinched the win.
All was not lost for Potomac Falls as the Panthers, who have won three straight Dulles titles, beat the Raiders handily, 20-38, with Panther Rachel Hagen nipping County's Kathryn Eder at the finish line by a second (20:27 to 20:28) to cap an exciting day of running.
Both County and Potomac Falls defeated Dominion. In other Dulles District action, Freedom swept Broad Run and Woodgrove while the Woodgrove girls beat Broad Run and the Broad Run boys defeated the host Wolverines. And at the Equine Center in Leesburg, Briar Woods swept Tuscarora and Park View and the Huskies swept the Patriots.
