Football: Briar Woods Survives Raiders Furious Fourth Quarter Comeback to Take Control of the Top Spot in Dulles District

Leesburg (Oct. 9, 2010) - Cruising at halftime, up 17-0, and leading comfortably headed into the final quarter, 24-7, the Briar Woods High School football team survived a furious Loudoun County comeback to take sole possession of first place in the Dulles District with a 30-28 victory.

Briar Woods sits in first at 3-0 and 5-2 after Broad Run (2-1, 6-1) beat Dominion (2-1, 3-3). Loudoun County (0-2, 2-4) is searching for its first district win.

Fresh of its stunning 20-13 win over Broad Run a week ago, Briar Woods rolled to 17-0 halftime lead Friday with Alex Carter scoring on a 6-yard run and Trace McSorley hitting Cameron Serigne for a 9-yard score.

When County cut into the lead on a Zach Ballinger 9-yard TD toss to Jack Reimers, Carter put BWoods back ahead by three scores by returning the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown.

The Raiders would not go quietly with Jake Lokey stepping in and throwing touchdown passes to Garrett Kranias and Brad Szoka, the latter midway through the fourth made it 24-21 Falcons.

Loudoun County ended up out-gaining Briar Woods by almost double in the contest, 251 to 139 total yards, but the Raiders could not overcome three interceptions, a lost fumble, five sacks allowed and 11 penalties given. Joe Rizzardi had two picks for Briar Woods and Victor Rizzardi had the other interception.

It was Joe Rizzard's interception and 25-yard return to the Raider 2 with 3:29 to play that set up Carter's second touchdown of the night, putting the Falcons up 30-21 with 2:06 to go.

The Raider stormed right back with Spencer Green taking the kickoff 64 yards to the BW 18 and Lokey connected on his third TD pass of the night, to Reimers, with 1:41 to go to make it a 2-point game. County's onsides kick did not work and the Falcons took over.

Unable to still run the clock out, the Raiders got the ball back for one final play but no miracle was found and the Falcons had the 30-28 victory.

Briar Woods was limited to eight total yards in the second half.
