Youth Sports: Flag Football - 1st Ever Elite Youth Tournament Pits Champs from 4 Leagues in 2 Age Groups

(June 15, 2011) - The Ashburn Youth Pro Flag Football League will host the first annual Elite Youth Flag Football tournament this Saturday, June 18 with champions from four leagues competing in two age groups.

Ashburn Youth Pro Flag, Ida lee from Leesburg, Sterling Select, and Fauquier County Youth Pro Flag are sending their champions from the 9-to-11 and 12-13 age group. The games will be held at the George Washington University, Virginia Campus beginning at 10am.

Youth Sports - Gymnastics: Bridgette Schaal and Allie Auten Wins 2011 Spirit of APEX Awards

(June 15, 2011) - APEX Gymnasts Bridgette Schaal (level 9) and Allie Auten (level 6) were voted by their peers the 2011 Spirit of APEX Award winners at the APEX end of year banquet on June 12.

This award is given to the gymnast each season who shows the true spirit of the APEX philosophy by their leadership, hard work and dedication to the sport and to being a good role model. Over 100 gymnasts and the coaching staff vote each year to honor this person. A plaque in their honor is on display in the APEX lobby showing all award winners since 1997.

Football: Tackling Camp at Freedom Looks to be a "Big Hit"

(June 15, 2011) - The Dulles South Youth Sports Football league in cooperation with Train Em Up Academy and the Freedom High School football staff is bringing Coach Bobby Hosea and his B.I.G.H.I.T.T.S. tackling camp to South Riding.

News: Briar Woods Jones and Karagiorgis Pick Up Postseason Softball Honors; Broad Run's Church All-Met Girls Soccer Player of Year

(June 15, 2011) - Briar Woods High School junior Macy Jones was named to the Washington Post All-Met first team, and senior teammate Kristina Karagiorgis was chosen as an honorable mention Tuesday, June 7.

Broad Run's Whitney Church was named the girls soccer Player of the Year for All-Met and Loudoun Valley's Gary McKay was tabbed golf Coach of the Year.

It was the second straight All-Met first-team honor for Jones and the first such honor for Karagiorgis.

Both Jones and Karagiorgis were instrumental in leading Briar Woods to its first-ever state softball championship this season.

Jones was dominant in the circle, posting a 23-4 record with a 0.39 earned run average. She struck out 349 batters, the sixth-highest single-season total in Virginia High School League history, and she allowed just 10 earned runs and 24 walks in 179 1/3 innings.
Jones was equally impressive at the plate, hitting .560 and posting an eye-popping .976 slugging percentage to go along with a .670 on-base percentage. She set a VHSL single-season record by scoring 51 runs, and she had 47 hits (tying for the fifth-most in VHSL single-season history) and nine triples (the second-highest season total in VHSL history). Additionally, Jones moved up to 7th on the VHSL career runs scored list (103) with another season left in her outstanding career.

Karagiorgis hit .469, slugged .750 and posted a .540 on-base percentage in her final season with the Falcons. She drove in a school-record 45 runs, which ties for the third-highest single-season total in VHSL history, and her 45 hits ranked just outside the VHSL top-ten list.
Karagiorgis also posted a 2-0 record in the circle, striking out 20 in 11 2/3 innings of work.

(June 15, 2011) - Broad Run High School senior Taylor Clarke was named to the 1st team All-State baseball squad this weekend as a Designated Hitter. Clarke had an outstanding senior season for the Spartans (23-4) whose season ended in the AA state semifinals.

Breaking News: Loudoun County Loses Two Top Coaches: Jackson Steps Down from Softball Program to Take Position with Terps; Long-time Boys Soccer Coach Goodwin Resigns

Leesburg (June 15, 2011) - Loudoun County High School athletic director Ken Wright announced the resignation of two varsity coaches this week: Dulles District Coach of the Year Amber Jackson from the softball program and boys soccer veteran coach Kris Goodwin.

Wright reported in a release:
"Amber Jackson, head softball coach, has resigned to take an Assistant Coaches Position at the University of Maryland in the softball program. The 2011 Dulles District Coach of the Year, Coach Jackson returns to the school she played for as a senior and will be the assistant coach for her former college coach.

"Kris Goodwin, head boys soccer coach, has resigned for personal reasons, but will continue to teach elementary PE at Creighton's Corner Elementary. Coach Goodwin was the head boys soccer coach for the past 7 seasons at LCHS, where he played and graduated."

Both positions will be posted by LCPS as soon as possible.

Briar Woods Wins 1st Softball State Title!

Broad Run Girls Soccer Makes it 4 Straight State Titles!

(June 15, 2011) - Loudoun girls just missed making it an All-Loudoun AA state finals for girls soccer and softball at Radford University over the weekend but in the end two state titles were still brought home with the Broad Run High School girls winning their fourth straight AA state title and the Briar Woods High School softball team capturing its first ever title.

Event the teams that didn't take home titles, fought hard and just missed out as Woodgrove softball -- in its first year with no seniors! -- finished runner-up to Briar Woods in the All-Loudoun softball finale and the Woodgrove girls soccer and Heritage girls soccer teams each fell 1-0 in the state semifinals. The lone boys team advancing to the Final Four was Broad Run baseball and the Spartans, after two weather delays, exited after a 7th inning rally in the semifinals fell short.

Yankees Sweep AAA and Majors Championships for LLLL

(June 15, 2011) - The 49th regular season of Lower Loudoun Little League (LLLL) wrapped up on Saturday, June 11 with five championship games. It was a season of change and a season where the league recognized its past and our present.

The season kicked off in April with opening day festivities at Jeff Cobb Field at Bill Washington Park, including the induction of the Lower Loudoun Little League 2011 Hall of Fame Class. Two new members were inducted this year:

Loudoun State Title Teams: All-Time List Updated

(June 14, 2011) - We have updated our Loudoun list of all-time Virginia High School League state champions and runner-ups by adding Briar Woods softball and Broad Run girls soccer to the list of champs and putting Woodgrove softball onto the list at runner-up.

And for the first time we have expanded the list with two new tabs: All-time individual state champs for such sports as track and field and swim and we have added those crowned VHSL state champs in non-athletic competitions such as debate and journalism. News: Early Registration for 2nd Annual Park View Football Golf Tournament Closes Tuesday

Sterling (June 13, 2011) - Early registration for the Park View High School football 2nd Annual Golf Tournament closes Tuesday, June 14. 4-man teams can save $60 by signing up now with a cost of $300 per foursome vs. $360 after Tuesday.

The tournament will be played Tuesday, June 21 at Goose Creek Golf Course with a 7 a.m. registration and an 8 a.m. start. Prizes and lunch included in the cost of the fundraiser.

Softball: Briar Woods Blasts Way to State finals

(June 10, 2011) - After a 40-minute delay as umpires were mixed up on the first pitch time, the AA state semifinals got underway this morning at Radford University and Broadway High School promptly took a 1-0 nothing lead on Briar Woods. The rest of the morning, however, was all Falcons as junior Macy Jones struck out 14 and collected three hits, including a 2-run home run, and senior Kristina Karagiorgis hit a 2-run home run that put Briar Woods ahead for good in an 8-1 win.

Briar Woods (24-4) will face the winner of today's Woodgrove vs. Northside 4 p.m. semfinal in Saturday's 1 p.m. title game at Radford.

Tennis: Freedom's Wesley Wong Advances to AA State Finals with Comeback Win Before Falling to 4-Time Champ

(June 9, 2011) - Freedom High School sophomore Wesley Wong came from behind to advanced to the VHSL AA singles state finals this morning but fell to 4-time state champion Salem's Patrick O'Keefe in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

O’Keefe becomes the first player in VHSL history to win four Group AA Boys Tennis State Titles, with the Thursday afternoon win at Radford University as part of the 2011 Spring Jubilee.

O’Keefe advanced to the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Gary George of Rockbridge County in the semifinals. Wong rallied from a set down (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) to defeat Tabb’s Chiraag Shetty to set up his finals matchup with O’Keefe.

HARTER WINS GROUP AA GIRLS TENNIS SINGLES STATE TITLE
Kristin Harter of Hidden Valley defeated James Wood’s Headley Wilson, 6-3, 6-4, to capture the Group AA Girls Tennis State Title Thursday afternoon at Radford University as part of the 2011 Spring Jubilee.

Harter advanced to the finals with a straight-set decision (6-4, 6-0) over Jessica Miller of Stuarts Draft.

Wilson held off York’s Wiktoria Plawska with a 6-1, 6-2 decision to set up her finals matchup with O’Keefe.

GEORGE MASON’S KAN TAGAMI CAPTURES GROUP A BOYS TENNIS STATE TITLE
Kan Tagami of George Mason defeated Glenvar’s Tim Howard in straight-sets (6-3, 6-1) to win the Group A Boys Tennis State Title, Thursday afternoon at Radford University as part of the 2011 Spring Jubilee.

Tagami advanced to the finals with a 6-0, 6-1 semifinal decision over Drew Barsamian of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School this morning.

Howard recorded a three-set win (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) over Lee’s Marc Huff to set up his championship match with Tagami.

MICHAEL CAPTURES GROUP A GIRLS TENNIS SINGLES STATE TITLE
East Rockingham’s Allison Michael cruised by Taylor Evans of Gate City, 6-1, 6-0, to capture the Group A Girls Tennis State Title Thursday afternoon at Radford University as part of the 2011 Spring Jubilee.

Michael advanced to the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Shelby Ford of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.

Evans held off Radford’s Cypress Beach, 6-2, 6-1 in Thursday morning’s other semifinal match.
