Girls Volleyball: Loudoun Valley, Stone Bridge Advance; Heritage's Season Ends in 5 Sets at Powhatan

(Nov. 6, 2012) - Loudoun Valley High School advanced to the Region II quarterfinals and a date with top seed Loudoun County with a win on the road Monday at Fauquier, and Stone Bridge High School advanced to the Northern Region quarterfinals with a sweep over Lake Braddock.

The Bulldogs will host Centreville tonight. The Northern Region bracket was turned upside as the No. 4 seed from the Liberty, James Madison, upset the Patriot top seed Woodson and the Concorde No. 4 seed Centreville knocked off the National top seed Yorktown. Liberty No. 1 Langley barely survived becoming a third top seed to fall after the Saxons beat Patriot No. 4 seed T.C. Williams in five sets.

Heritage had its season end with a 5-set loss at Powhatan.

Baseball: Potomac Falls Senior Zack Engelmann to Pitch Next Year at Lynchburg College

Sterling (Nov. 5, 2012) - Potomac Falls High School senior Zack Englemann will pitch next year at NCAA Division III Lynchburg College.

Englemann and the Panthers went 21-4 last season, falling 10-7 in heartbreaking fashion to Powhatan in extra innings in the Region II semifinals.

Lynchburg's 2012 roster included Ashburn native Dan Savage (Paul VI).

Football: Unbeaten Stone Bridge, Briar Woods Hold their AP Poll Spots; Tuscarora Jumps Up

(Nov. 5, 2012) - The unbeaten Stone Bridge and Briar Woods high school football teams held their AP Virginia state poll rankings with the Bulldogs still No. 4 in AAA and the Falcons No. 2 in AA. Tuscarora (9-1) jumped up four spots in AA from No. 9 to No. 5.

Soccer: NASL Announces Virginia Team to Begin Play in 2014 in Loudoun

Ashburn (Nov. 5, 2012) - VIP Sports & Entertainment announced Monday night in a press conference at Loudoun Soccer Park that it is partnering with Loudoun Professional Soccer, LLC, who have been awarded a franchise in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The franchise will debut in 2014 playing its home games at the future Ballpark located at One Loudoun in Ashburn.

Baseball: Heritage's Matt Chapman Commits to Play at Washington College

 Leesburg (Nov. 5, 2012) - Heritage High School senior Matt Chapman has officially accepted an offer to attend and play baseball at NCAA Division III Washington College in Chestertown, Md.

Chapman submitted his early decision agreement to Washington College last week. He will receive an academic scholarship awarded by the Mohegan Tribe of Conn. He also was awarded the Washington College Scholarship award.

Chapman's recruiting is a success story as the outfielder sat out his entire sophomore year with an ACL replacement.

Chapman will join Woodgrove pitcher Tom Griffin at Washington College in 2013.

Girls Volleyball: Playoff Round-up Oct 31-Nov. 3

(Nov. 5, 2012) - Last week featured 23 girls volleyball playoff games in the Dulles, Cedar Run and Liberty districts and even AAA Northwest Region tournament action. Here is The Skinny on how the Loudoun teams did:

AA Dulles District Finals

Loudoun County def. Potomac Falls, 3-2 (25-14, 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 15-11)

The Skinny: Loudoun County jumped out early in the district tournament championship to 7-0 lead in the 1st set, and a 2-0 lead after the 2nd set, but Potomac Falls would not quit. The Panthers won the next two sets to force a 5th and deciding set. The Raiders were able to fight back to take the match and the trophy by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 15-11. Loudoun County improved to 22-1 on the season, won their 12th straight match, and finished their 3rd straight season undefeated in the Dulles District at 59-0.

Girls Volleyball: Saturday Playoff Scores

(Nov. 4, 2012) - Saturday featured several great high school girls volleyball playoff matches with Loudoun County capturing the AA Dulles District tournament title in five sets over Potomac Falls.

Langley defeated Fairfax in another exciting 5-set affair at Stone Bridge to take the Liberty District title and Freedom swept Halifax County in the firs round of AAA Northwest Region tournament.

The Northern Region and Region II tournaments get underway this week.

Seven of Loudoun's 13 high school are alive in regional play: Broad Run, Freedom, Heritage, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls, and Stone Bridge.

Football: VHSL Playoffs First Week - 72 Match-ups!

(Nov. 4, 2012) - The Virginia High School League football playoffs are set for the first week of Regionals and six Loudoun schools -- Briar Woods, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Tuscarora, Woodgrove and Stone Bridge will be in action.

Briar Woods (10-0), Tuscarora (9-1) and Loudoun County (8-2) are the top three seeds in Region II Division 4 with Woodgrove (7-3) travelling to Loudoun County in an all-area playoff match-up. The Raiders beat the Wolverines, 48-7, in September in Purcellville.

Briar Woods, two-time defending state champion, will host Powhatan in a rematch of last year's Region II title game won by the Falcons 21-7 and Tuscarora will host Millbrook in a rematch of a season opener won by the Huskies, 41-21.

In Region II Division 3, Loudoun Valley (4-6) makes the playoffs as the No. 8 seed despite the sub-.500 season. The Vikes will travel to top seed Skyline (9-1).

In Northern Region Division 5, Stone Bridge (10-0) is once again the top seed, hosting Edison (5-5). The Bulldogs are facing the Eagles for the first times since the two teams face each other in four straight Northern Region finals from 2005 thru 2008 with Stone Bridge claiming wins in 2005, 2207 and 2008. The Bulldogs fell to South County last season in the regional semifinals, snapping a 13-game regional win streak.

(Nov. 4, 2012) - Briar Woods High School captured the school's fourth straight Region II competitive cheer title Saturday night at John Champe High School in Aldie. The Falcons will compete for a fourth straight AA state title on Sat. Nov. 10 at VCU in Richmond.

Joining the Falcons in Richmond will be three teams that placed third place in Regionals on Saturday including Tuscarora in Region II and AAA schools Broad Run (Northwest Region) and Stone Bridge (Northern Region).

Volleyball: Broad Run Claims Cedar Run Title; Loudoun County, Potomac Falls Advance to Dulles Finals; Stone Bridge Upset in Liberty Semifinals

Spartans claim another Cedar Run title

(Nov. 2, 2012) - It was a busy night of high school playoff girls volleyball Thursday with Broad Run sweeping Freedom to claim the AAA Cedar Run District tournament title. In the AA Dulles District, top two seeds Loudoun County and Potomac Falls swept to Saturday's 3 p.m. tournament finals and in the AAA Liberty District, top seed Stone Bridge was upset at home by No. 4 seed Fairfax in the tournament semifinals.

More than half of Loudoun's 13 teams will advance to the regional playoffs including Broad Run, Freedom, Heritage, Loudoun County, Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls and Stone Bridge.

You Pick'Em: Week 10 Results - The Field Gains on the Leader

(Nov. 2, 2012) - We had 132 fans play last week and nine went 10-0 but the real story of the week may be that our season-long leader Mtneer32 went a human 8-2 and had more than a dozen players gain a game on his first place spot.

Our fans are playing for an overall season prize of $100 to the winner (plus $100 to their favorite Loudoun high school) with second place netting $50 and third place $25.

Mtneer32 leads Swift30 and WVU FB by a game and BWoods Champ 2010 and TBreeden by two games with six full weeks of play left!

Weekly the winner gets a swag Viva Loudoun T and this week we went to the tiebreaker and Hammied of Leesburg gets the T ... for a second straight week. Talk about your sobering picks ... Cross Country: Tuscarora Girls Take Region II Title; Loudoun County SR Patrick Joseph Wins Boys Title

Nov. 1, 2012) - It may have been an overcast start to November but Loudoun athletes shined at the Region II cross country meet today at the Morven Park course adjacent to Tuscarora High School with the host Huskies taking the girls team title and Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph winning the boys individual title.

The Potomac Falls boys also moved onto the AA state meet with a third place finish and seven area boys and five girls also qualified as individuals by finishing in the Top 15 including Woodgrove freshman Emma Gillies who placed third.
