Football: VHSL Proposes Modified Ratings Formula to Work with 2013-15 Preliminary Model

(March 15, 2012) - The Virginia High School League is proposing the most sweeping changes to its postseason model since the current A, AA, AAA classification system was put into place in 1970 and with  that comes a need for working models.

While football has already expanded to six classifications -- which is the proposal for all sports starting the 2013-15 two-year cycle -- the change from the current set-up of district play to regional play to state play with the advent of a new postseason structure that includes an all-in conference level for other sports followed by region and state play means that football would have to change its postseason structure.

Football: Washington Post Predicts Dulles District Team to Collide in Region II Division 4 First Round

(Nov. 5, 2011) - Washington Post's Prep Guru Josh Barr is predicting that both Briar Woods and Stone Bridge will be No. 1 seeds when the playoffs start next week and that Broad Run will earn a bye as a No. 2. He also forecasts that the four Dulles District Division 4 teams will meet in the first round with No. 5 Heritage at No. 4 Loudoun County and No. 8 Park View at No. 1 Briar Woods.

Barr's other forecasts: Tuscarora hosting Warren County in Region II Division 3 and Stone Bridge hosting Langley in Northern Region Division 5.

Official pairings will be released sometime Sunday or Monday.

Football: 7 Loudoun Teams Still in Playoff Position with Just One Week Left in Regular Season

(Oct. 31, 2011) - 2 ... 4 ... 6 ... 8 ... who do we appreciate!?! How about the Dulles District which is currently holding down the 2-4-6-8 spots in the Region II Division 4 playoff picture with one week in the football regular season.

Briar Woods at No. 2 in Division 4 has some company in the second slot as Tuscarora is No. 2 in Region II Division 3, Broad Run is No. 2 in Northwest Region Division 5 and Stone Bridge is No. 2 in Northern Region Division 5.

Park View, at No. 8 in Region II Division 4, is the only team on the bubble as the Patriots season is complete so they will be limited to a few bonus points this coming week as team's they have faced win games. Millbrook, trying to make-up ground on the Pats, could edge ahead with an upset over Sherando and then some help from opponents such as Tuscarora, Harrisonburg and Skyline to come up with wins.

Football: VHSL Ratings Updated - Park View Vaults to Playoff Position to Make 7 Loudoun Teams with Postseason Potential

(Oct. 24, 2011) - In the age of the expanded playoffs a late season win and 3-6 record is good enough to put Park View High School in playoff position as the Patriots vaulted to the No. 8 spot in the current Region II Division 4 VHSL ratings released Monday.

If Park View can hold its spot, it would give the Dulles District half of the regional field with Briar Woods (7-1) currently No. 2 in Division 4, Lodoun County (7-1) sits No. 4 and Heritage (6-2) at No. 6. It would be the Pride's first ever playoff appearance.

In Division 3, Tuscarora (7-1) is tied for No. 3 in Region II. In the Northern Region, Stone Bridge (7-1) sits No. 3 in Division 5 and in the Northwest Region, Broad Run (6-2), despite its loss to Battlefield, maintains the No. 2 spot.

(Oct. 17, 2011) - The Virginia High School League has released the Top 10 teams per each division according to their ratings after Friday's contests, and Broad Run (in Division 5) and Briar Woods (in Division 4) are both ranked No. 4 in the state.

Football: Six Loudoun Teams in Playoff Position in Latest VHSL Ratings

(Oct. 10, 2011) - The Virginia High School League released its latest football ratings Monday and six of Loudoun's 12 teams are playoff position with five of the teams currently looking to host a first round playoff games.

Loudoun County remains No. 1 in Region II Division 4 with a 23.50 rating and Briar Woods has moved up to a tie for secondat 23.17 with Louisa. Heritage sits No. 6 at 21.33. In Region II Division 3, Tuscarora is No. 4 at 22.17.

In AAA, Stone Bridge is No. 2 in Northern Region Division 5 with a 26.50 rating and Broad Run is No. 3 in the Northwest Region Division 5 with a 25.83.

Football: VHSL Releases First Official Ratings of 2011 Season

(Oct. 3, 2011) - The Virginia High School League released its first official football ratings of the 2011 season. These ratings are used to determine playoffs teams and seedings in each division and region.

In Region II, four of the nine Dulles District teams are in playoff position with four of the eight teams currently in the Division 4 field -- Loudoun County, Briar Woods, Heritage -- all from Loudoun and Tuscarora in the D3 race. Loudoun County, after missing the playoffs in 2010, is tied for first in D4. Heritage and Tuscarora are looking for first ever playoff bids.

Stone Bridge sits second in the Northern Region D5 race and Broad Run third in the Northwest Region D5 race.

Football: Six Loudoun Teams Appear Set for Playoffs

(Nov. 2, 2010) - Appears likely that half of Loudoun's 12 high school football teams have booked playoff tickets as the Virginia High School League has released its weekly ratings with one game left in the regular season.

Undefeated Stone Bridge (9-0) sits on top of Division 5 in the Northern Region with a 30.7 rating. The Bulldogs should have homefield advantage for their 3-game region title run.

Loudoun Valley (7-2) is headed to the playoffs in Division 5 in the Northwest Region where the Vikes are currently third with a 25.9 rating.

In Region II, Briar Woods (7-2) and Broad Run (9-1) are third and fourth in Division 4 with 26.7 and 26.5 ratings -- trailing unbeaten Louisa (27.1) and Sherando (27.0). In Division 3, Dominion (4-5) should make the playoffs for the first time in school history, win or lose against Briar Woods this week, and Park View, even with a 3-6 record, is in playoff position. This is the first year that Region II has expanded the playoffs from six to eight teams per each division.

Football: VHSL Ratings - Stone Bridge and McLean Tied in Northern Region D5 in Advance of Friday's Showdown

(Oct. 25, 2010) - In the latest VHSL football ratings, undefeated Stone Bridge is tied for first in the Northern Region Division 5 standings with McLean at 28.5 points. The two teams tangle Friday in Ashburn with the Liberty District title and homefield advantage in the regional playoffs at stake.

Also in AAA, Loudoun Valley at 25.1 in the No. 4 seed currently in the Northwest Region Division 5 playoffs. If the Vikes can maintain that spot they will earn a home playoff date in the regional quarterfinals.

In AA, four area teams are in the playoff picture with Broad Run ranked No. 2 in the Region II Division 4 rankings with a 26.3 mark and Briar Woods -- which beat Broad Run but has two losses overall to the Spartans one -- is tied for third at 25.8. In Division 3 in Region II, Park View and Dominion held their playoff ground despite losses last Friday, mostly due to tough non-district schedules the two teams have slated. The Patriots are at No. 5 with a 19.8 and the Titans, looking for the school's first ever playoff trip, are No. 6 at 19.1.

Football: Latest VHSL Ratings - Six Loudoun Teams in Playoff Position

(Oct. 19, 2010) - The latest Virginia High School League football ratings put six of Loudoun's 12 schools in playoff position with undefeated Stone Bridge on pace to be the top seed in the Northern Region Division 5 playoffs.

Loudoun Valley is poised to return to the playoffs in the Northwest Region Division 5 playoffs and Broad Run and Briar Woods rank 2-3 in the Region II Division 4 ratings. This division is loaded with talent with the top seven teams -- Liberty, BR, BW, Louisa, Sherando and Fauquier -- a combined 39-5 on the season. And in the Region II Division 3, Park View and Dominion are in the top eight.
