News: Flash Flood Watch in Effect from Noon Today Through Evening

(Aug. 25, 2011) - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the area from noon today through this evening.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop today and may be numerous to widespread this afternoon into early evening.A few of these thunderstorms will be capable of producing heavy rainfall. Widespread rainfall amounts of one to two inches can be expected in the I-95 corridor through this evening. However, a band of heavier rainfall, producing rainfall in excess of two inches in just a couples of hours, will be possible.

Football: VivaLoudoun Seeks Sponsor for You Pick'Em Contest

(Aug. 24, 2011) - VivaLoudoun is gearing up for our annual high school football You Pick"Em contest and we are seeking a local business to sponsor this year's fun competition.

This year, the winner of the contest will not only receive $100 but will also get $100 donated to the Loudoun high school booster club of their choice. In addition, the runner-up for 2011 will win $50 and third place will net $25. Weekly winners will earn VivaLoudoun t-shirts.

A panel of media experts will also pick the games each week with the winner of the end of the year having $100 donated to a charity of their choice.

Softball: Stone Bridge Names Billy Rice New Varsity Coach

(Aug. 24, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School athletic director Dave Hembach announced Wednesday that Billy Rice is the Bulldogs new varsity softball coach.

Hembach: "Billy is beginning his second year of coaching and teaching at Stone Bridge. Prior to coaching at Stone Bridge he coached in Florida, Georgia, and Maryland. Last year Billy worked with both the JV and varsity teams and ran the off season conditioning program. He also coaches varsity football and teaches English.

The Bulldogs will host a "Meet the Coach" night once school starts.

Youth Sports - Girls Basketball - Rising 6th Grade Teams Forming, coached by Tuscarora Varsity Coach Newkirk

(Aug. 24, 2011) - Premier Sports Performance Academy (PSPA) is having tryouts Sat. Aug. 27 and Mon. Aug. 29 for rising 6th grade girls. The head coach of the 11U team is Tuscarora High School varsity coach Michael Newkirk.

The tryouts are at the FLEXX Center in Lansdowne, 2 to 3:30 on Saturday and then at Tuscarora High School on Monday from 8 to 9 p.m. It is recommended that players make both tryouts if possible. The cost of the tryout is a one-time payment of $25.

Basketball: Potomac Falls Senior Graves Pulling Down the College Offers

Sterling (Aug. 22, 2011) - Potomac Falls High School senior Gregory Graves, who helped the Panthers to back-to-back VHSL Division 4 boys basketball state titles, has already hauled down four college offers with more schools taking interest in the 6-foot-7 talented player.

Graves, who has generated buzz this summer while playing with the Richmond-based Team Loaded AAU squad, holds offers from Longwood University, Manhattan College, Mount Saint Mary's and Northeastern.

News: Polls Open at 6 a.m. for Primaries Tuesday

(Aug. 22, 2011) - Polls in Loudoun County will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 23, for the 2011 Primary Election. Anyone in the 31st Senate District is eligible to participate in the Democratic Primary. Anyone in the 13th Senate District, the 10th House District and/or the 87th House District is eligible to participate in the Republican Primary. There are ten Loudoun County precincts not voting this election and several precincts in which only part of the precinct will be voting because of the new house and/or senate lines resulting from the recent redistricting.

Golf: Dominion Grad Boudreau in PGA Professional Golf Management Program at Eastern Kentucky

(Aug. 19, 2011) - Dominion High School grad and former varsity golfer Richard Boudreau has been accepted into the School of Business Technology and PGA Professional Golf Management Program at Eastern Kentucky University.

Boudreau will be playing golf with the PGA PGM in tournaments throughout the year, and "The Jones Cup" championship, which pits players from PGA PGM programs across the country. Boudreau will also be trying out for the EKU golf team as a walkon.

News: Visit Loudoun Seeks Organizations to Apply for Sports Grants to Host Events

(Aug. 19, 2011) - The Loudoun Convention and Visitors Association, also known as Visit Loudoun, is seeking local organizations to apply for sports grants to host athletic events in Loudoun County.

"Once again, we are pleased to offer grant funding to interested organizations looking to host an upcoming sports tournament in our area," said Visit Loudoun's Karin Aaron.

In 2010, Loudoun County was voted by Sports Event Magazine as the “2011 Places to Play and Watch” and listed in the Washington Business Journal with 4 out of 5 Top Golf Courses in the region.

Golf: Freedom and Broad Run Finish 2-3 in Cedar Run Mini Tournament

(Aug. 19, 2011) - Freedom High School finished runner-up at the first Cedar Run District mini golf tournament on Aug. 11 at the 1757 Golf Club with Broad Run taking third. Both schools have moved up to AAA this season from the AA Dulles District.

Battlefield won the tournament with a 308 and Freedom shot 318 with Broad Run two back at 320. Newly-opened Patriot High School was fourth at 331.

News: School Board to Hold Special Meeting Aug. 23 to Review Boundary Calendar for Frederick Douglass Elementary School

(Aug. 19, 2011) - The Loudoun County School Board will hold a special meeting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, August 23rd, in Room 101D of the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administrative Offices in Ashburn. The purpose of the meeting is to review the boundary calendar for Frederick Douglass Elementary School, which is scheduled to open in August 2012.

Golf: Dominion and Briar Woods Tie for Cheer Invitational Title; Heritage and Potomac Falls Just Two Strokes Back

(Aug. 18, 2011) - There wasn't a whole lot of separation between Dulles District golf teams at Tuesday's 2011 Cheers Invitational at Algonkian with Dominion and Briar Woods tying for the title with 319 points and Heritage and Potomac Falls just two strokes behind in the tightest finish in years for a district mini tournament.

Heritage's Ryan Douglass was the low medalist at 69, two strokes ahead of Tuscarora's Alec Gard. A quartet of players finished at 75: Christian Fortier of Potomac Falls, Adam Ochs of Briar Woods, Sam Stillwell of Dominion and Ian Hildebrand of Loudoun Valley.

The tie for the Titans was enough to keep Dominion in the lead for the Dulles regular-season title as the Sterling school took the first district mini of the year. Tuscarora, runner-up in the first mini, was fifth Tuesday at 327 which gave the Titans even more breathing room. The Titans can probably lose as many as two dual meets and still take home the district crown.

Woodgrove's Aaron Price won closest to the pin honors with a shot less than 10 feet to the hole. Dominion's Brenden O'Hara won the long drive contest with a 277-yard blast.

The tournament was not only a Dulles District mini tournament but it featured all 12 Loudoun schools with the three AAA schools in competition as well.

Girls Basketball: Loudoun County Center Cummings to Play at NCAA Division I St. Frances College

(Aug. 16, 2011) - Casey Cummings, rising senior center at Loudoun County High School, has verbally accepted a scholarship to attend NCAA Division I St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, NY. St Francis competes in the Northeast Conference.

Cummings averaged 10.8 points and 12.7 rebounds as a junior for the 26-5 Raiders in 2010-11. She played AAU basketball this summer for the Potomac Valley Vogues 11th Grade National Team and is the 4th member of the Vogues to verbally accept a Division 1 scholarship. The Vogues finished 3rd at the AAU National Tournament in Orlando, FL in July.

Football: Loudoun Valley's Jackson Catches Scholarship to Boston College

Harrison Jackson hauls in a TD catch in the Vikings playoff win last season over Stafford.

(Aug. 16, 2011) - Loudoun Valley High School senior wide receiver Harrison Jackson has hauled in his biggest catch yet -- a full ride scholarship offer to ACC school Boston College which he has verbally accepted.

The 6-foot-2 Jackson caught 30 balls last year for 329 yards and six touchdowns. Jackson helped the Vikings make the playoffs last year and advance to the AAA regional semifinals. He is expected to be a big-play maker for Valley this season as the Vikings move down to the AA Dulles District.
