Cross Country: Raider Boys, Wolverine Girls Show Best at Oatlands

(Sept. 23, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School boys and Woodgrove High School girls cross country teams have been the frontrunners thus far this season and they cemented those spots with the best local finishes at the Oatlands Invitational last weekend. The Raider boys were 13th overall in a tough varsity A field and the Wolverine girls took 14th.

Football: Heritage at Park View Postponed Until Sat. at 1 p.m. Due to Power Outage at School

(Sept. 23, 2011) - The Heritage High School football game at Park View scheduled for tonight has been pushed back to Saturday at 1 p.m. due to a power outage at the school.

The Park View athletic website reported Friday that: A transformer and ground wires close to the school have been detected as having problems and cutting power from the entire school campus. If power conditions are restored and weather permitting the Homecoming festivities will be as follows on Saturday:

News: Attackers of Broad Run Grad Ryan Diviney Move Civil Trial to Federal Court

Morgantown, W.V. (Sept. 23, 2011) - Ken Diviney, Ryan Diviney’s father, and Brian McLhinney, Ryan Diviney’s friend, jointly filed a civil lawsuit this August in Monongalia County Circuit Court in connection with the 2009 beating in Morgantown, WV, which left Ryan Diviney comatose and McLhinney badly injured.

In recent legal maneuvers, the defendant’s attorneys removed the civil case filed against their clients to Federal Court in Clarksburg, WV.

News: "Layups in Loudoun" Basketball Charity Game at Briar Woods Sat. to Raise Funds for Special Olympics

(Sept. 22, 2011) - "Layups in Loudoun", a basketball fundraiser for Special Olympics, will tip off Saturday night, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. at Briar Woods High School.

The event, organized by Stone Bridge High School basketball alum Eric Pearson, promises the greatest showcase ever of former Loudoun prep basketball greats. Coaching the alumni all-star teams will be Broad Run High School coach John Cosello and Potomac Falls High School coach Jeff Hawes.

Football: Tuesday, er Thursday, Afternoon Quarterback - Week 4

(Sept. 22, 2011) - It may only be September but this week's prep football schedule in Loudoun has a November-like feel to it as old and new rivalries highlight a week of highly competitive match-ups.

You have your #BattleOfTheBurn with Stone Bridge (2-1) hosting Broad Run (4-0) in game that pits two of the top programs in Loudoun and the state in recent years against each other. The schools are just 2.3 miles apart and programs are built upon players who were teammates with each other in the Ashburn Youth Football League. The game is non-district but the bragging rights will last for years!

And you have your #BattleOfTheBurg with 2nd-year Leesburg school Tuscarora (1-0, 3-0) hosting Loudoun County (1-0, 3-0). Some of the Huskies started their football careers at County before Tuscarora opened and the game has huge Dulles District implications.

The Schedule also feature some other interesting toss-ups: Heritage (2-0, 3-1), already having won as many games this year as the past two years combined, takes a 3-game winning streak to Park View (1-1, 1-3), a team that exploded for 49 points on Friday in a win at home over Woodgrove. Dominion (0-2, 0-3) will travel to Woodgrove (0-2, 2-2) in a game with two teams looking for first Dulles District win. Briar Woods (2-0, 2-1) rolls into Potomac Falls (1-1, 1-3) after two big district wins.

Finally, Freedom (0-4) looks to end its winless start while hosting Wakefield (0-3) .

News: Virginia High School League Executive Committee Amends Out-of-Season Practice Rule

Charlottesville (Sept. 21, 2011) - The Virginia High School League Executive Committee amended, as emergency legislation effective immediately for all VHSL member schools, the out-of-season practice rule by a vote of 22-1-2 at today’s Executive Committee meeting.

The amendment is as follows:

27-8-1 – Out-of-Season Practice Rule (note: revisions are underlined)

All VHSL member school sponsored athletic teams are restricted from any organized activities during designated “dead periods.” Out-of-season dead periods shall be 10-day periods beginning with the first permissible practice date of a sports season as published in the VHSL Calendar. A summer “dead period” for all athletic teams shall be week 1 of the NFHS standardized calendar.

During the dead periods, no coaching, observing or contact between a coach(s) or player(s) may occur in the VHSL member school sponsored sport team or activity involved. There may be no VHSL member school sponsored practice, open facilities, weight training/conditioning, out of season league(s) or member schools sponsored clinic/camps. Outside of the dead periods, all VHSL member school sponsored activities may occur on any day except Sundays. Schools, districts and/or regions may impose more restrictive guidelines. VHSL catastrophic insurance is not applicable to any out-of-season activities.

College Corner: Football - Park View Grad Hayes Helps Shepherd to 64-7 Win Over Seton Hall

(Sept. 21, 2011) - Park View High School graduate Robert Hayes, a sophomore defensive lineman at Shepherd University, had six tackles over the weekend to help the Rams to a 64-7 win over Seton Hall. Shepherd improves to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in WVIAC play.

News: Heritage and Loudoun Valley Appeals to Move Down to Division 3 are Denied by VHSL

(Sept. 21, 2011) - Heritage High School and Loudoun Valley High School will likely have student enrollments at  end of this month that would place them among the smallest Division 3 schools in Region II but because the Virginia High School League uses numbers from the spring -- when the two schools had full senior classes that hadn't shifted yet to new schools Tuscarora and Woodgrove -- the Pride and Vikings have been placed in the larger Division 4 for football and basketball playoffs.

The schools filed an appeal with the VHSL to move down to Division 3 but that appeal died today, not even getting a vote, as it lacked a second from the floor.

Sterling (Sept. 20, 2011) - Briar Wood High School shot a 324 today in wet conditions at 1757 Club to win the AA Dulles District meet by four strokes over Heritage.

"It was real tough conditions today and there is a lot of trouble everywhere," said Briar Woods first-year golf coach Mike Benson, likely known to most Falcon fans as the school's boys basketball coach. "324 is a real strong score, especially when you play the first 12 or 13 holes in the pouring rain."

It was the Falcons third tournament title and first since 2007. Regular season champion Dominion -- third on Tuesday with a 335 -- advanced along with Briar Woods to Region II tournament.

Loudoun Valley's Ian Hildebrand took low individual honors with a 73, but his Viking team, which went 7-0-1 in the dual meet season with a tie to Briar Woods, was only able to muster a 340 for fourth place, one stroke ahead of Tuscarora and five better than Woodgrove.

News: Lansdowne High School? Loudoun Board of Supervisors Votes to Purchase NCC Property for New Ashburn Area School

(Sept. 20, 2011) - The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Tuesday voted to purchase land located at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne to be used for a new high school in Loudoun County, currently referred to as "HS-8."

Football: Angry Birds! Briar Woods Pummels Second Straight Opponent

(Sept. 20, 2011) - Broad Run High School is no longer in the Dulles District but that hasn't prevented the Spartans from stirring the district pot as their season-opening win over defending Division 4 state champion Briar Woods has created a team of "Angry Birds" with the Falcons opening district play by out-scoring two opponents, 101-3!

On the heels of a 53-3 win over Park View a week ago, Briar Woods shut down Dominion Friday, 48-0, to improve to 2-0 in Dulles District and 2-1 overall. Dominion is 0-2 and 0-3.

Briar Woods even started this game slow with just a 3-0 lead after the first quarter but that was followed by a flurry of points in the second quarter as the Falcons flew to the end zone six times in less than eight minutes, including three Trace McSorely TD throws.

McSorley, who also ran in a score during the stretch, found Devin Ramos for a 27-yard score, Cam Serigne for a 12-yard score and Matt Rolin for a 27-yard score. Also, Cory Colder had a 22-yard TD run and Alex Carter broke off a 56-yard TD run.

With a running clock in the second half, Briar Woods tacked on a second David Clements field goal (he hit from 36 and 24 in the win) for the 48-0 final.

The Falcons out-gained the Titans, 292-68 in the contest. Briar Woods defense registered four sacks, picked off three passes, recovered two fumbles and held Dominion to 0 for 8 on third down attempts in the game.

McSorley finished 6 of 14 for 152 yards and the three scores with one interception. Rolin caught three passes for 84 yards. A bevy of Briar Woods backs, eight total, combined for 140 yards on 31 carries. Carter, Melvin Holland and Brandon Brown had the picks. Joe Rizzardi, who twice registered safeties a week ago with sacks in the end zone, had two more sacks Friday. Mark Leith and Zach Sload also had sacks.

Golf: Dulles District Tournament Tees It Up at 1757 Club This Morning; Dominion Claims First Golf Regular Season Title

(Sept. 20, 2011) - The Dulles District will hold its season-ending tournament starting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at 1757 Club in Sterling.

Dominion High School, which won the first district mini tournament and tied for the second district mini tournament in August with Briar Woods, captured its first ever regular season title after finishing 6-2 in the dual season. The regular season district title is awarded on equal weight between each mini tournament and the dual season.

Loudoun Valley, which had an uneven team performance in the two district mini tournaments, finished the dual season unbeaten with seven wins and a tie with Briar Woods. Dominion, Briar Woods and Loudoun Valley are expected to compete for the team title today with Tuscarora and Heritage also figuring to be in the top half of the field.

Girls Lacrosse: Dominion Names Denise McKenna as New Varsity Coach

(Sept. 19, 2011) - Dominion High School has named Denise McKenna has the school's new girls varsity lacrosse coach. Players and parents can meet Coach McKenna on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dominion Media Center.

McKenna,previously the school's head JV girls coach, replaces Don Gasser. McKenna, who holds a Bachelors of Science in biology/animal physiology and a Masters in teaching, both from Cornell University, teaches at Seneca Ridge Middle School in Sterling.

Football: Broad Run Defense Gives Up a Score After 14 Straight Scoreless Quarters but Spartans Win Again to Improve to 4-0

(Sept. 19, 2011) - And they said AAA would be hard. Broad Run High School, which won 39 of 40 regular season football games in AA before moving up in classification this year, improved to 4-0 on the season with a 29-14 win at Forest Park Friday.

The Spartans will face Ashburn rival Stone Bridge (2-1)  Friday at 7:30 p.m. for the first time since 2004. The two schools, 2.3 miles apart, are a combined 83-4 since 2007 with Broad Run winning Region II and Division 4 state titles in 2008 and 2009 and finishing regional runner-up in 2010. Stone Bridge has won four straight Northern Region titles and captured the 2007 Division 5 state title, made the state semifinals in 2008, and finished runner-up in the state in 2009 and 2010.

The Spartans were up 29-0 Friday before allowing two fourth quarter touchdowns. Those were the first points scored against Broad Run since the first quarter of the season opener.

Football: Tuscarora Opens Year 3-0 with 28-14 at Loudoun Valley

(Sept. 19, 2011) - In just the second year since opening in Leesburg the Tuscarora High School football program is ready to make an impact in the Dulles District as the Huskies defeated Loudoun Valley, 28-14, Friday night in a Dulles District opening in Purcellville to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Tuscarora scored four TDs in the first half, building a 28-6 lead with Cameron Molina scoring on runs of 20 and 34 yards and Chris Holoman scoring from 1-yard out. The Huskies final score of the half was an exciting interception return for 99 yards by John Johnson as he picked off a ball in the end zone and took it all the way to the other end.

Loudoun Valley (0-2, 1-3), which has dropped three straight since a season-opening win over Fauquier, got TD throws from Neil Frazier to Harrison Jackson for 38 yards and to Wesley Robinson for 4 yards as well as another 100-yard-plus rushing performance from Donald Devine but it wasn't enough for the Vikings.

Football: Statement Win! Loudoun County Shuts out Sherando on the Road, 28-0, in Key Division 4 Contest

(Sept. 19, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School football team made a big statement with a, 28-0, shut out win at Sherando Friday in a key Region II Division 4 non-district game.

The Raiders improve  4-0 on the season, just a win shy of last year's win total, while Sherando falls to 2-2.

Loudoun Couny's defense registered its second shutout of the season, limiting the Warriors to minus-14 yards rushing in the first half on 1 attempts. Sherando came in averaging 406 yards total offense  per game  but was limited to 143 total Friday.

Raider quarterback Jake Lokey was super efficient with 10 of 11 passing for 146 yards passing, including a 34-yard score to Brad Szoka for  the game's first score that capped a 5-play, 65-yard drive. Lokey also scored on a 1-yard run after a 24-yard reception to Brock Badman set up the touchdown.

Both Antonio Rutherford (94 yards rushing) and Badman had rushing TDs.

County could have won by a bigger score but their first drive of the night ended on fourth down inside the Sherando 10 and they fumbled the ball away later in the first quarter inside the Sherando 30 after Szoka had picked off a ball for good field position.

Rutherford gained all but 11 of the Raiders 60 yards on the second scoring drive, taking it in from 12 yards.

Leading 14-0, Lokey's keeper on the first play of the fourth quarter put the game away. Badman finished the scoring with a 3-yard run.

Football: Stone Bridge Bounces Back with 50-14 Win

Ashburn (Sept. 19, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School football team suffered a rare regular-season loss a week ago against Chantilly but the Bulldogs bounced back Friday with a big 50-14 Liberty District win over South Lakes.

Stone Bridge (1-0, 2-1) took the lead immediately as senior Stan Johnson returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score. By the time the firs quarter was over, the Bulldogs led 22-0 and they were up 36-7 at the half.

Junior quarterback Ryan Burns was 3 of 6 for 117 yards with two of those completions going for scores to Jake Kuzbel, for 19 and 58 yards.
