Cross Country: 3,855 Runners Tackle heat, hills at Oatlands - Tuscarora Girls, Stone Bridge Boys Shine Brightest for Local Teams
(Sept. 22, 2012) - On a hot morning, some 3,855 cross country runners tackled the hills and sloshed through the mud at the 2012 Oatlands Invitational.
Chantilly, behind senior Sean McGorty's winning time of 15:26, won the boys varsity A race with 90 points, way ahead of runner-up Battlefield at 194. Stone Bridge (299) finished in a tie for sixth thanks to the pack running of junior Brady Guertin and seniors Austin Lushinski and Robert Willis, as they took 33 thru 35 within two seconds of each other.
Loudoun County senior Patrick Joseph was 10th in the field of 357 runners with a 16:27.
In the girls varsity A race, co-host Tuscarora (226) finished fourth with Osbourn Park winning in a close race with 150 points to runner-up Bethesda-Chevy Chase 164 and Battlefield 168.
Woodgrove freshman Emma Gillies was 10th with a 20:00 and Briar Woods senior Jackie Deffer took 1tth with a 20:14. The Huskies were led by sophomore Anna Wasko (20:54) and junior Colleen Heberle (21:00).
Broad Run boys won the varsity B race with junior Dane Boegner pacing the squad with a 17:40 for 15th.
Loudoun Valley girls were fifth in the varsity B race. Potomac Falls junior Sarah Dillistin was fourth at 20:42.

Cross Country: Almost 5,000 Runners to Compete at Saturday's Oatlands Invitational
(Sept. 20, 2012) - Almost 5,000 high school cross country runners from more than 100 schools will hit Leesburg Saturday Sept. 22 at the 2012 Oatlands Invitational at the historic Oatlands Plantation.
The meet is hosted by Tuscarora and Freedom high schools. All 13 Loudoun public high schools will be represented at the massive meet.
Parking: Follow signs and attendants. Admission charge will be $5.00 per car.

Cross Country: Raider Boys, Wolverine Girls Show Best at Oatlands
(Sept. 23, 2011) - The Loudoun County High School boys and Woodgrove High School girls cross country teams have been the frontrunners thus far this season and they cemented those spots with the best local finishes at the Oatlands Invitational last weekend. The Raider boys were 13th overall in a tough varsity A field and the Wolverine girls took 14th.

Cross Country: Potomac Falls Boys Finish Surprising Second in Huge Oatlands Invitational Field
(Sept. 25, 2010) - The Potomac Falls High School boys cross country team finished second Saturday at the Oatlands Invitational in the 41-team Boys A varsity race, the best finish ever by a Loudoun school at the huge event which features some 90 high schools and more than 3,000 athletes.
Seniors Nick Morgensen (17:11), Connor Wilson (17:14) and Juan Campos (17:17) all finished within six seconds of each other in the hot conditions on the historic Oatlands Plantation grounds outside of Leesburg. Their 22-24-27 finish was the basis for a 218 team score which trailed only winner Stafford (152).
The Panthers, which also go an 18:05 from senior Patrick Wilson and 18:14 from junior Grant Deker for finishes of 66th and 79th, had previously finished third twice in the event.
Loudoun County, led by senior Tommy Curtin's sixth place finish at 16:28 and senior Austin Talbot's 17:19 (32nd) finished eighth in the team competition with 295 points.
The boys varsity race was won by Morgantown's COdy Pelliccioni, defending his title from last year. West Potomac, Jefferson (WV) and Good Council trailed PFalls in the team standings.
Freedom's Thorpe Lichtenberg finished 10th with a 16:41.
In the girls varsity A race, Potomac Falls was seventh with 270 in a race won by TJ with 167. Bishop O'Connell was second at 192 followed by Osbourn Park (210), West Potomac (213) and Walt Whitman (234) in the strong field.
Senior Rachel Hagen led the Panthers with a 20:48 for 38th with teammate, freshman Sarah Dillistin, right behind at 20:50 and junior Koeley Brady just back at 20:59.
Woodgrove, led by junior Lydia Cromwell at 20:31 and sophomore Alex Juzbasich at 21:14, was 12th.
The race was won by Cosby junior Megan Maoye at 18:26.
Other races

Magruder won the race with 137 points and Heritage was fourth at 277. Stone Bridge freshman Brady Guertin was third at 17:28.
Girls Varsity B
Westfield won with 189 points. Like the boys race, Heritage was fourth. Stone Bridge sophomore Courtney Gibson was second 21:43.
JV Junior/Senior Boys
West Potomac won the team title and Potomac Falls was third.
JV Junior/Senior Girls
TJ won the team title and Heritage was fourth.

Cross Country Notebook: Area Teams Ready for Oatlands Invitational Saturday
(Sept. 24, 2010) - The good news for area cross country runners is that they don't have to go far for one of the largest meets, not only in Virginia, but on the East Coast as the 6th Annual Oatlands Invitational Saturday outside of Leesburg will feature 90 high schools and almost 4,000 athletes.
Freedom and Tuscarora are the hosts for the massive 5K meet run on the grounds on of historic Oatlands Plantation. The course is mostly grass, with rolling hills, some wooded trails, and two creek crossings (assuming there has been enough rain of late!).
Parking is $5 per car. Directions can be found here.
The record-breaking high of 95 degrees will cool a bit to 86 degrees on race day but conditions will still be hot for the normal race conditions.
Loudoun County senior Tommy Curtin was a Top 10 finisher on the boys varsity A race last year and should challenge for a podium place Saturday.

Cross Country: 6th Annual Oatlands Invitational to Feature 90-Plus Schools and Almost 4,000 Athletes
(Sept. 13, 2010) - Mark your calendars for Sept. 25 as one of the largest sporting events of any nature in the state of Virginia comes to Leesburg as Freedom and Tuscarora high schools host the 6th Annual Oatlands Cross Country Invitational.
The giant meet features eight different races, which will be run every 30 minutes starting at 9 a.m. and ending with the varsity A races at noon and 12:30 p.m. Organizers are estimating that more than 90 high schools will be represented and nearly 4,000 runners on the grounds. VivaLoudoun will be on hand to cover the great meet!

Cross Country: Potomac Falls Leads Area Varsity Teams at Oatlands; LC's Julie Strange and Tommy Curtin Turn in Low Area Times

Leesburg (Sept. 27, 2009) - More than 3,000 runners and some 85 high school cross country teams converged on scenic Oatlands Saturday for one of the largest meets of the year in Virginia and after eight overall races, it was powerhouse Potomac Falls with the best local team showing while Loudoun County had the top two lowest local times.
"It was an awesome meet today. We got lucky with the weather," said Tuscarora High School Athletic Director Derek Farrey, one of the meet's co-directors along with Freedom AD Matt Oblas. The overcast skies kept the temperatures down and while the water crossing was deep enough to get the runners wet, the rain stayed away until the awards ceremony for the Moore Cadillac Hummer Oatlands Invitational and then fell only lightly.
The Panther girls and boys finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the highly-competitive varsity "A" races and had the best average team times among the 10 Loudoun schools with the PF boys averaging 17:26 and the girls 20:50. Individually, Loudoun County junior Tommy Curtin had the best Loudoun time with a 16:24 for ninth place overall in the varsity "A" race and Loudoun County senior Julie Strange had the best Loudoun time on the girls side with a 19:36, which placed her 20th in the varsity "A" race.
