Competitive Cheer: Stafford, Westfield, Broad Run Claim Top 3 Spots at Park View Invitational

(Oct. 10, 2012) - Stafford High School captured the varsity bracket at the Park View Invitational with Westfield runner-up and Broad Run third.

Dulles District's Woodgrove claimed fourth followed by Freedom, Loudoun Valley, host Park View and then first-year program John Champe.

In the JV competition, Stafford again claimed top honors followed by Woodgrove, Freedom and Park View.

News: Voter Registration Deadline in Loudoun is Oct. 15

(Oct. 10, 2012) - The deadline to register to vote in the November 6, 2012, general election is 5:00 p.m., Monday, October 15, 2012. All applications must be received or postmarked no later than this date in order to be effective for the November 6 election.

Baseball: Woodgrove Senior Pitcher Tom Griffin to Throw for Washington College Next Year

Purcellville (Oct. 10, 2012) - Woodgrove High School senior Tom Griffin will pitch next year for NCAA Division III Washington College in Chestertown, Md on the Eastern Shore.

Griffin also plays for the Virginia Shamrocks travel baseball team where he was selected this summer to the National Amateur Baseball Federation High School Division "2012 World Series All Tournament Team"

Washington College, which traces its baseball roots back to 1871,  plays in the Centennial Conference and posted a school-record 28-12 mark in the spring. Travis Turgeon, a former NCAA Division I pitcher, was named head coach in June after the retirement of long-time coach Al Streelman.

Golf: Loudoun Valley JR Ian Hildebrand Finishes Runner-up at AA State Tournament

Harrisonburg (Oct. 10, 2012) - Loudoun Valley High School junior Ian Hildebrand finished runner-up at the AA state golf tournament at the Lakeview Golf Club, just missing the state title after Blacksburg's Ryan Monday shot a sizzling 67 Tuesday for at two-day total fo 145 to edge Hildebrand by a stroke.

Heritage's Ryan Douglass earned all-state honors with a tie for 8th at 148 and Dominion's Erik Dulik just missed all-state by a stroke, shooting 149.

Salem ran away with the team title with a 597, 25 strokes better than runner-up Spotswood. Dominion finish 7th with a 648. Full results:

Baseball; Stone Bridge Sophomore Pitcher J.B. Bukauskas Becomes First Verbal Commitment for Class of 2015

(Oct. 10, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School sophomore pitcher J.B. Bukauskas has become the first verbal commitment for the Class of 2012 with his early decision to play at the University of North Carolina starting in 2015-16 according to Virginia Preps.

Bukauskas was named the Liberty District Pitcher of the Year after a strong freshman campaign in which he went 7-1 with 76 strikeouts in 59 innings with a 1.99 ERA

College Choice Chart: Freedom's Kyle Wrighte and Heritage's Natalie Perussault Join Early Commitments for Class of 2014

(Oct. 9, 2012) - Viva Loudoun's College Choice Chart for the Class of 2014 has doubled from two to four athletes with Heritage girls soccer player Natalie Perussault giving a verbal commitment to UMass Amherst, according to her club soccer team, and Freedom baseball player Kyle Wrighte giving an early commitment to William and Mary, according to Virginia Preps.

College Choice Chart: Class of 2013 Grows to 44 Athletes

(Oct. 9, 2012) - The Viva Loudoun College Choice Chart for the Class of 2013 has quietly been growing over the last week with the addition of four soccer players (Corinne Grioux (Stone Bridge/William and Mary), Kylie Shutz (Potomac Falls/George Mason), Connor Smith (Gonzaga/Lehigh) and Miles Khalil Davis (Tuscarora/St. Louis) as well as one lacrosse player Morgan Miller (Woodgrove/Delaware). There are now 44 athletes on the Class of 2013 charts.

Boys Basketball: Flexx All Stars to Hold 13U Tryouts for Premier National Team

(Oct. 9, 2012) - Flexx All Stars boys basketball AAU club will hold tryouts for their 13U Premier National Team on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness. Please visit the Flexx All Stars website to sign up for the tryouts.

Flexx All Stars is an AAU Club level 3 member, and are consistent winners of local and regional competition. They are seeking highly competitive, serious basketball players for year round regional tournament participation, and State and National Championship competition in 2013.

Baseball: Diamond Elite 14U Takes Longhorn Stampede Silver Bracket Championship

(Oct. 9, 2012) - The 14U Diamond Elite baseball squad topped challenging opposition to take first place in the silver bracket of the Longhorn Stampede Tournament, held Sept 28-30 in Loudoun County. With a regular season record of 10-0-1, scoring 142 runs and allowing just 33, this powerhouse lineup came into the tourney as the No. 1 14U team in the Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League (NVTBL).

Girls Volleyball: Loudoun County Supports the Fight Against Breast Cancer

(Oct. 9, 2012) - The Loudoun County High School girls volleyball team is raising money in the fight against breast cancer by hosting a Dig Pink - Side Out Foundation event on Oct. 11 when the program takes on Leesburg neighbor Tuscarora.

News: Veteran's Day 5K Planned for Loudoun's Newest Regional Park

(Oct. 9, 2012) - A Veteran's Day 5K race is planned for Bolen Park in Leesburg, Loudoun's newest regional park. Runners will travel throughout the park around sports fields, over bridges and through wooded trails at the Sunday Nov. 11 event.

News: Burning Guidelines in Effect Until Feb. 14

(Oct. 9, 2012) - Loudoun County allows specific open burning, as listed below, between October 1, 2012 and February 14th, 2013. Open burning is prohibited year-round within the town limits of Middleburg, Leesburg, Hamilton, Purcellville, Round Hill, Hillsboro, and Lovettsville. Open burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions or when atmosphere conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous may be prohibited and/or required to be extinguished.

Football: Briar Woods No. 2 in AA; Stone Bridge No. 4 in AAA in AP State Polls

(Oct. 9, 2012) - Briar Woods High and Stone Bridge high schools retained their impressive rankings in the AP state prep polls with the Falcons No. 2 in AA and the Bulldogs No. 4 in AAA.

Briar Woods (7-0) received four AA first-place votes but No. 1 Brookville gained six top votes. Region II's Kettle Run is No. 5 with Warren County No. 8 and Western Albemarle No. 9.

Oscar Smith received eight of the 11 first place votes in AAA with the other three going to No. 2 Hermitage. Westfield is third.

Golf: Local Golfers Make Bid for State Title at AA Tournament

(Oct. 9, 2012) - Loudoun golfers are making a strong bid to bring the Virginia High School League AA individual state title back home for a second straight year with a trio -- Heritage's Ryan Douglass and Ryan O'Sullivan and Loudoun Valley's Ian Hildebrand -- all shooting 73 Monday to sit one off the pace of co-leaders at 72.

It appears unlikely that Loudoun will celebrate any team titles as Dulles District champion Dominion had a tough opening day, shooting 337 as a team to sit last in the 8-team field for the two-day event at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg. The Titans were paced by Erik Dulik's 76 and defending state champion Sam Stilwell's 80.

Cross Country: Woodgrove Freshman Emma Gillies First at Quad States Invitational

(Oct. 8, 2012) - Woodgrove High School freshman Emma Gillies continued her sparkling debut with a first place 19:25 performance on her home course Saturday at the Quad States Invitational. Briar Woods senior Jackie Deffer was runner-up at 19:40.

Nick Causey of Osbourn Park took the boys varsity race with a 16:20 with Briar Woods senior Chris Schopper runner-up at 16:41 and junior teammate Ryan Hughes just behind at 16:45. Photographer Jeff Vennitti was on hand to shoot the awards ceremony.
