Ashburn (Feb. 23, 2011) - Broad Run High School junior quarterback Connor Jessop has received his first scholarship offer, from the University of Richmond. More offers are likely to come from the 6-foot-4 Jessop who threw for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns despite playing just four games last season due to injury.
As a sophomore Jessop threw for 1,336 yards and 14 touchdowns and scored five on the ground as he led the Spartans to a VHSL Division 4 state title and perfect 14-0 season. In the 21-16 title game win over Amherst, with star running back T.J. Peeler injured early, Jessop calmly threw for three scores on 12 of 20 for 135 yards.
Jessop's junior season was derailed with a broken collarbone in the second week of the season but he returned in the playoffs to lead Broad Run to the Region II title game where the Spartans fell, 24-21, to rival Briar Wood despite Jessop throwing for three scores and 274 yards on 21 of 26 passing. Jessop's numbers for 2010 projected out to a full season would have been an incredible 39 touchdowns and 3,209 passing yards.

Ashburn (Feb. 22, 2011) - The FLEXX All Stars AAU program will hold open tryouts in March for its boys grade 4 and grade 5 teams.
FLEXX is looking for 10 and 11-year-old boys looking for an opportunity to develop their skills to the next level. Ashburn (Feb. 22, 2011) - Don't let the Stone Bridge High School girls basketball team's powder blue uniforms or bevy of speedy guards fool you ... this team is 23-3 on the season because of a blue-collar attitude and the Bulldogs had the bruises to show for it after a bruising, 43-30, win over Hayfield in the Northern Region first round.
Sophomore Murielle Tiernan and senior Cori Prince each scored 13 points to lead the Bulldogs that trailed early in the second half, 18-17, before re-establishing a 6-point lead by the end of the third quarter and then gradually pulling away down the stretch. Stone Bridge will host Robinson on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Megan Della-Penna, gaining confidence as the season progresses, put Stone Bridge ahead for good, 19-18, with a pair of free throws with 4:20 to go in the third. Tiernan, working hard on the boards against a strong inside Hawks team, put back a miss to make it 21-18.
Hayfield got back to within a point on a nice drive by Taylor Jewett but Prince hit one of her three 3-pointers in the game to make it 24-20 with 2:47 left in the third. While Hayfield's 6-foot-2 Shannen Cochrahan was able to post up for two of her team-high 10 points, the Bulldogs -- back by a boisterous home crowd -- finished the quarter strong with Della-Penna finishing another offensive rebound and then Prince turning a steal into a layin for a 28-22 lead going into the final quarter.
Midway through the final quarter, Hayfield stuck close, down by just four, 32-28, after back-to-back Cochrahan buckets but the Stone Bridge fullcourt pressure started to wear on the Hawks and Stone Bridge forced Hayfield to send them to the line where Stone Bridge shot 7 of 13 in the final four minutes.
Prince's sister, sophomore Nicole Prince, provided a spark down the stretch, getting to the line for a free throw and then with a nice assist to Tiernan on the press break. When Stone Bridge went into a well-designed stall, Hayfield spent more than a minute chasing the Bulldogs and then when they overplayed the guards up top, Tiernan went backdoor and made a basket for an And-One opportunity that made it Stone Bridge, 38-28, with 1:41 left.
If it wasn't for a Hayfield jumper in the waning seconds, Stone Bridge would have held the Hawks without a field goal in the five and half minutes of the contest.

Ashburn (Feb. 22, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School senior Kyle Gouveia, an all-around leader for the Bulldogs back-to-back runs to the VHSL Division 5 state title game, has committed to play football next year at James Madison University.
Gouveia becomes the fifth Bulldog to commit, joining teammates Rob Burns (Virginia), John Cheritis (Washington and Lee), Calvin Hollenhorst (Coastal Carolina) and Spenser Rositano (Boston College).
The recruiting process between Gouveia and James Madison happened late and rather quickly according to the Bulldog in an interview Tuesday as he said the school asked him to make a visit on Saturday and then an offer was made and accepted. The Dukes envision Gouveia, a linebacker in high school, as a safety in college.
"I'm excited, playing defense is what I love," said Gouveia, who also played offense and special teams for Stone Bridge. "I've always been more a defensive kind of guy."
Leesburg (Feb. 22, 2011) - APEX Gymnastics is gearing up to host the 10th Annual Emerald City Classic, a competition featuring more than 600 gymnasts representing over 20 clubs.
The event will take place March 4-6 at APEX Gymnastics in Leesburg. The competition is for Levels 4 thru 10 and will feature the APEX competitive team, which has had some outstanding results already this year.

Sterling (Feb. 22, 2011) Park View High School’s dynamic junior guard, Ryan McCarter, scored his 1,000 point of his career last week in the Dulles District boys basketball semifinals against Potomac Falls. While McCarter and his Patriots fell in that contest, they advance to the Region II Division 3 quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed with a trip to Jefferson District tournament champion Charlottesville Wednesday.
McCarter sat at 999 points when he netted a 3-point shot in the second quarter vs. the Panthers to surpass the 1,000-point milestone.
McCarter reached a 1,000 in two and a half seasons on varsity ball. He was called up to the varsity midway through his freshmen year and scored 19 points in his third game as he first displayed his trademark poise and calm in big games.
Since then, according to Patriot coach Mike Koscinski, McCarter has been nothing short of sensational.
This season, McCarter is averaging 22 points per game, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game and has 70 steals on the season.
“Ryan has had to adjust his game each year depending on the needs of our team. We have depended on him greatly this season to help control the boards on both ends of the floor and he has stepped up to the challenge by grabbing over 190 rebounds this season,” said Koscinski.
Added Koscinski: “Ryan draws the toughest defensive assignment each night and also has to guard the opponents best man on a nightly basis. Teams have played him real physical and bodied him up and he has had to adjust how he scores. When Ryan is on, his teammates understand that it opens the floor for everyone else to thrive. He constantly gets the attention of several defenders on every possession and he has never backed down to a challenge.
At the conclusion of the Dulles District tournament, McCarter’s career mark sits at 1,034 points.

Expect snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches of snow, according to ABC7's Perfect Storm Team, with the heaviest snow to the north.

Purcellville (Feb. 19, 2011) - Both the Loudoun County girls and the Potomac Falls boys opened strong Friday night and defended their Dulles District basketball tournament titles at Woodgrove High School.
Loudoun County trailed only in the opening minute of the opener before taking a commanding, 32-12, halftime lead and then held off a ferocious Freedom comeback to collect the Raiders third tournament title in four years -- all against Freedom -- with the 54-49 win.
In the second game, before a packed house, Potomac Falls never trailed and led by 14 in the first quarter and 22 at the half on the way to a 73-55 victory over surprise finalist, No. 7 seed Woodgrove.

Both Loudoun County and Potomac Falls were also regular-season champions.
In the first game it the fourth straight year that Loudoun County (21-4) and Freedom (18-7) were meeting in the finals. While high-scoring senior Brittany Batts was held scoreless in the first quarter, the Raiders still jumped out to a 12-6 lead behind juniors Alex Lapple and Erica Linnemann, who combined for 10 of their 22 points in the quarter.
Batts heated up in the second quarter with seven points and center Casey Cummings, who had a team-high 14 points, scored five including a 3-pointer as the Raiders went up by 19 points at the break.

Held to one field goal in the first half, Freedom senior Dionna Scott broke loose in the third quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points, and Freedom made a valiant charge at the Raiders, holding County to just four points in the quarters.
Cummings had some key baskets in the fourth quarter as Freedom's comeback fell a couple of baskets short.

In the boys game, Potomac Falls (24-1) got a scoring boost in the opening quarter from a pair of senior guards who don't normally carry the scoring load as Zach Curran and Pete Simoneau each hit a pair of 3-pointers. Curran finished with 13 and Simoneau had 11.
The Panthers had four players in double figures with Greg Graves, very strong in the fourth quarter after Woodgrove (10-15) had made a run to get within 13 points going into the final quarter, finishing with 18 points and Brendon Chesson scored 11. The Panthers leading scorer Lukas Mihailovich only scored eight points but did a nice job defensively, with tight defense on Wolverine junior Brad Gilson, and some nice work on the boards.
Gilson, displaying a smooth stroke with his long range jumper, finished with 23 and teammate Brett Danielson scored 11.
Potomac Falls will host district rival Broad Run on Tuesday in the Region II Division 4 quarterfinals and Woodgrove will host a Division 3 quarterfinal, the loser of Charlottesville vs. Monticello in the Jefferson District finals.

On the girls side, Loudoun County will host district foe Potomac Falls and Freedom will host yet another Dulles District team, Briar Woods.
(Feb. 19, 2011) - Loudoun wrestlers had a good first day at the VHSL AA state meet in Salem with three athletes advancing to the semifinals: Potomac Falls 145-pounder Batchka Zulkhuu, Loudoun County 160-pounder Kenton Perrez and Freedom heavyweight DaQuante Timbers.
All three cruised on Friday with Zulkhuu advancing with two falls, the first in 3:13 and the second in a quick 35 seconds. Perez scores 16-1 and 10-0 victories and Timbers also had two falls to advance, the first in 2:48 and the second in just 34 seconds.
Other Loudoun wrestlers are still in the hunt in the consolation bracket. Check back for more details over the weekend.
(Feb. 19, 2011) - Loudoun qualified three athletes for this weekend's AAA state swim meet at Princess Anne Recreation Center in Virginia Beach.
Heritage's Kaleigh and Damon Rosenburg each qualified for States in two events at the Northwestern Region meet with Kaleigh winning the 200 IM with a 2:07.39 as well as third in the 100 breast in 1:05.89 amd Damon won the 100 breast in 58.35 and took fifth in the 200 IM in 159.75. Heritage;s Dan McAllister finished 7th (56.85) in the 100 back and missed State by one place.
For Loudoun Valley, senior Kelsey Ryan qualified for states in the 100 fly and 100 back, finishing 4th in both events and breaking two school records. Junior Ian Miller broke a school record in the 100 breast, and the girls 200 free relay team of Kelly Johnson, Sheridan Suminski, Rachel Swan, and Kelsey Ryan also broke a school record. Reston (Feb. 19, 2011) - With their top player, sophomore Murielle Tiernan, in foul trouble most of the night, the Stone Bridge High School girls basketball team pulled together and beat perennial Liberty District power Madison, 45-41, at South Lakes High School for the Bulldogs first ever district title.
With Stone Bridge leading 9-2 early, Tiernan picked up two quick fouls and stayed on the bench the remainder of the first half.
Freshman Megan Della-Penna and senior Hannah Beth Whitaker played fabulous for the Bulldogs on both ends of the court and sophomore Nicole Prince was assigned the job of guarding high-scoring Megan LeDuc, who had 32 points in the Warhawks semifinals win over Fairfax.
"Nicole made her work for everything and did a phenominal job limitong her looks," reported Stone Bridge coach Chris Jones.
Junior Kayla Sleece also came in to guard LeDuc and kept her in check.
Offensively, a pair of Stone Bridge seniors, Kayleigh Guzek and Cori Prince, lead the way with leadership, making big shots, and playing tenacious all night long.
Another senior, Erin Dzurilla gave SB key minutes off the bench when Cori and Nicole Prince, both got in foul trouble.
Jones: "It was a total team effort. and with Murielle never really getting into the flow of the game, our team showed why they are champions."
Stone Bridge (22-3) has homecourt advantage for the first two rounds of the Northern Region tournament next week.

(Feb. 18, 2011) - The Stone Bridge High School girls is just one win away from adding the Liberty District tournament title to their regular-season title. The Bulldogs face Madison tonight at 7:45 p.m. at South Lakes High School after beating McLean, 47-34, on Thursday in the semifinals.

(Feb. 18, 2011) - The Region II basketball tournament seedings are all but official and it is a major case of good news and bad news for Dulles District fans. The good news: 10 teams will advance. The bad news: six of those 10 teams will face each other in the regional quarterfinals, including four Division 4 girls team that comprise an entire side of their 8-team bracket.
And the other other local first round match-up next Tuesday is another Division 4 early showdown as Broad Run, slipping to the No. 8 seed after falling to Woodgrove in the first round of the district tournament, travels to No. 1 seed Potomac Falls.
In Division 4 girls, No. 7 Potomac Falls will play at No. 2 Loudoun County while No. 6 Briar Woods will play at No. 3 Freedom. The winners of those two games will then square off in the semifinals with a regional title game and guaranteed state bid on the line.
The fifth girls team to make the tournament will be Park View as a No. 7 seed in Division 3.
The Briar Woods boys will be a No. 5 seed in Division 4 and Woodgrove is has moved all the way up from being a No. 7 seed in the district tournament to hosting a regional game as the first-year Wolverines will be the No. 4 seed in Division 3. Park View makes the tournament as the No. 6 seed.
First the Dulles District tournament titles will be handed out tonight at Woodgrove as Freedom and Loudoun County meet for the fourth straight year in the girls final and upstart Woodgrove takes on Potomac Falls.
