News: Wachovia Cup for Athletics Winners Announced by VHSL: Western Branch, Hidden Valley and Radford Win
Charlottesville (June 23, 2011) - Western Branch, Hidden Valley and Radford claim the top spots in VHSL athletic competition for the 2010-11 school year, winning the coveted Wachovia Cup for Group AAA, AA and A. In Group AAA, Western Branch won its first Cup title, while in Group AA Hidden Valley won for the second time, and in Group A Radford claimed its second straight Cup.
Loudoun had five AA schools finish in the top 20: Loudoun County (8th), Briar Woods (9th), Broad Run (11th), Potomac Falls (13th) and Woodgrove (tied 19th).

Field Hockey: Girls Invited to Thursday Night Drop-In Sessions at Foxcroft Starting July 14
(June 22, 2011) - “Thursday Nights Field Hockey,” a fun, drop-in opportunity for girls entering 7th grade and up to learn and play the game, will be offered at Foxcroft School weekly, beginning Thursday, July 14, Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced recently. All girls interested in playing field hockey, regardless of skill level, are welcome to come to once, twice or every week through Aug. 18.

Calabria said the economic situation today is much as it was when he graduated from George Mason in 1991.

Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun Athletes of the Month for June 2011
Photo shoot held at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn.
Ashburn (June 21, 2011) - Cheers Sports and VivaLoudoun.com released today their Athletes of the Month selections for June 2011. The June 2011 honorees met at Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn on June 12 for a double photo shoot along with the May 2011 group which was released last week.
Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's public and private high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For June 2011, a total of just three to four athletes per each of the 10 spring sports (baseball/softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls track and field) were selected with the 38 athletes coming from 11 different high schools.

Softball: Broad Run Grad Powell Becomes First Badger to Make 1st Team All-Big Ten Since 2002
(June 20, 2011) - Broad Run High School grad Karla Powell, returning nicely from shoulder surgery that ended her sophomore season, became the first University of Wisconsin softball player to make first team All-Big Ten since 2002.
Powell, limited in the field due to the injury, was selected as a Designated Player after leading the Badgers in home runs, doubles, slugging percentage and walks. More on her selection to the Big Ten team.

Potomac Falls Principal Janice M. Koslowski and Katie Ann Lantzy, senior class president, jointly greeted the audience of family, friends, faculty and the graduates.

(June 20, 2011) - 20th Judicial Circuit Judge Thomas D. Horne urged the 459 graduates of Stone Bridge High School to put adventure into their life during their graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 16th, at George Mason University’s Patriot Center.
Horne put some adventure into his own life four months ago by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Not that this adventure was without adversity…
“The Velcro straps on my rented snow pants decided they weren’t as committed to the trip as I was. I took this opportunity to laugh at myself and, by laughing at myself, take my mind off the grueling task at the side of the mountain.”

News: Golf Tournament to Benefit Loudoun County Community Holiday Coalition's Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program

Boys Soccer: South Riding Native Foss Helps D.C. United Academy Secure U-16 Mid-Atlantic Division Title
Washington, D.C. (June 20, 2011) - D.C. United’s U-16 and U-18 Youth Academy teams secured top honors in Mid-Atlantic Division regular season play a week ago, as both sides finished in first place in their respective divisions. This marks the first time in club history that the U-16 and U-18 squads earned first place during the same campaign, securing automatic berths into the U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Playoffs.
The U-16’s (16-6-5, 9-3-0) won both of their weekend matches behind four goals from South Riding native Patrick Foss, emphatically defeating FC Delco 5-1 on Saturday, June 11 and then beating PA Classics 3-0 on Sunday, June 12.

Boys Lacrosse: Freedom's Matthew Johnson and Broad Run's Michael Mabry to Play in Champion All-American Showcase at Disney
(June 20, 2011) - Freedom High School graduate Matthew Johnson and Broad Run High School graduate Michael Mabry have been selected to represent the South Region in the 2011 Champion All-American Showcase boys lacrosse tournament.
This traditional US Lacrosse event, the Champion All-American Showcase, returns to the ESPN RISE Games this summer and will feature the nation’s elite high school players representing all corners of the United States. Players are nominated and selected by high school coaches throughout the country to compete in a four-team format over three days at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Girls' All-American Showcase will be held July 17-19 and the Boys' All-American Showcase will held July 20-22.

Football: Stone Bridge Rising Junior Quarterback Burns is Offered by Virginia
(June 20, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School rising junior Ryan Burns picked up an offer from University of Virginia coach Mike London after participating in their 7x7 camp over the weekend.
Burns before his sophomore year picked up an offer from Boston College. He has been named as one of the "35 to Watch For in 2013" by the 2011 Sporting News College Football Magazine. Burns is one of six quarterbacks listed in the nationwide list.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge's Herndon is Added to D.C. United Women Roster
Germantown, MD (June 19, 2011) - D.C. United Women take to the road for the final time in the 2011 regular season this weekend to play two W-League games in two days. They will play with two new additions including Stone Bridge High School rising junior Ashley Herndon, who becomes the youngest player on the club's United Soccer Leagues' W-League.
Youth Sports - Flag Football: Thrillers Mark First Ever Elite Championship
(June 19, 2011) - The first annual Elite Flag Football Championships lived up to its billing as the finals were a pair of thrillers with the Ida Lee Ravens erasing a 20-6 halftime deficit to edge the Fauquier Jaguars, 35-34, in U11 and in U13, the Fauquier Vikings won, 16-13, over Ashburn Youth Pro Flag Lions in the U-13 finals.
"It was an incredible day and an incredibible tournament," reports organizer Joe Kearney.
In the U11 bracket and in a very entertaining game, the Ida Lee Ravens (Leesburg) were trailing the Fauquier Jaguars 20-6 at halftime. The Ravens turned it up a notch inthe 2nd half and pulled out a tight 35-34 victory to clinch the 1st ever Elite Flag Football Championship title.
Earlier in the day, the Ravens had another come from behind win in defeating the previously undefeated Cascades Titans,26-24, and the Jaguars defeated the Ashburn Youth Pro Flag champion, the Vikings, 31-19, to advance to the title game.
In the U13 bracket and in another squeaker, The Fauquier County Champion Vikings defeated the Ashburn Youth Pro Flag Champion Lions , 16-13, to capture the tournament title The game came down to the final series with the clock running out on the Lions. Baseball: Dulles District Places 5 on AA All-State Team
(June 16, 2011) - The Dulles District placed five players on the AA All-State baseball team including Potomac Falls High School pitcher Jackson Rogers and Broad Run's Taylor Clarke at DH. Potomac Falls slugger Michael Lascomb was second team and Woodgrove's J.J. Sarty and Freedom's Matt Malacane made honorable mention.

The 2011 Dominion Boys Basketball Camp will feature daily individual and group skill sessions. Individual tournaments such as Hot Shot, Free Throw and One-on-One competitions. The two sessions each day will also feature 5 vs. 5 fullcourt games for both the NBA and NCAA divisions.

Each month VivaLoudoun editor Dan Sousa selects the top athletes from across Loudoun's public and private high schools for the Cheers Sports Athletes of the Month program. For May 2011, a total of just three to four athletes per each of the 10 spring sports (baseball/softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls track and field) were selected with the 38 athletes coming from 13 different high schools.
"Loudoun's success in the playoffs this spring made the decision of selecting these athletes very difficult," said Sousa.
