Softball: Super Saturday for Ashburn Softball

Ashburn (April 27, 2012) - Three of the most successful softball program in Virginia will compete for bragging rights when Briar Woods High School hosts the 1st Annual Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn Softball Tournament this Saturday, April 28.

Stone Bridge and Briar Woods square off in the day’s first game at 11 a.m., and Broad Run faces Stone Bridge at 1 p.m. The final contest features Briar Woods and Broad Run at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $6 per person and are valid for all three games. Fans are permitted to leave and re-enter the complex with a valid ticket stub.


The tournament is sponsored by Honda of Dulles, which also sponsored Battle of Ashburn

Tournaments between the three schools in several other sports this year. All three teams are enjoying outstanding seasons and are ranked in the most recent poll by the Washington Post.

All three schools are located within a six-mile radius, and many of the players know each other and have met on the diamond during previous high school and travel seasons, bringing even more intensity to the tournament.

Briar Woods won the VHSL Group AA state championship last year and finished with a 25-4 record. The seventh-year program is 10-2 this year and boasts a 74-15 overall record since the start of the 2009 season.

Broad Run has continued its winning ways in its first season at the AAA level after dominating AA play in recent years. The Spartans, who won three straight AA state crowns from 2007-2009 to go along with another state title in 2000 and state runner-up finishes in 1994 and 2002, are 10-1 overall and sit atop the Cedar Run District with a perfect 5-0 mark.

Stone Bridge was off to a perfect 11-0 and 8-0 in the Liberty District before a loss Tuesday to McLean. Prior to Tuesday the Bulldogs were averaging an eye-opening 14 runs per game and had scored in double digits in 10 of their first 11 games, and their closest contest was a 5-4 win over Madison in late March. Stone Bridge, the 2006 AAA state runner-up, posted an 18-4 record last season, finishing as the Liberty District Tournament runner-up and advancing to the regional tournament.

Broad Run owns a 12-3 all-time record against Briar Woods and a 10-2 mark versus Stone Bridge. This will be the first-ever meeting between Briar Woods and Stone Bridge.
