News: Loudoun Valley Principal, Student Council Receive Awards

(April 16, 2012) - Loudoun Valley High School Principal Sue Ross was named the Virginia Student Council Association (VSCA) Secondary Principal of the Year at the VSCA Convention last month in Williamsburg.

Nominated by the Viking Student Council, the surprise announcement was made at the convention’s March 24 banquet. Ross will receive the award at the spring conference of the Virginia association of Secondary School Principals, the co-sponsor of the award. At the same banquet, the Loudoun Valley Student Council received the 2011-2012 Achievement Award for the group’s varied activities throughout the school year.


Ross is in her seventh year leading Loudoun Valley High School. Before becoming an administrator, she taught biology and chemistry for 20 years and is endorsed in gifted education. Ross taught at Piedmont Virginia Community College; taught, and coached softball for the University of Virginia; and taught and coached in Orange County, Va. – for a total of more than 30 years of experience in education.

In addition to presiding over the weekend’s activities, Woodgrove Senior Kelsey Briel, the VSCA president, and Loudoun Valley senior Katie Stevenson, the VSCA vice president, addressed banquet attendees.

On several occasions during their remarks they referenced, the working “family” of leadership and excellence that they believed led to the Loudoun Valley’s SCAs success during the school year.

Thirty-one students, three advisers and two faculty chaperones traveled to Williamsburg for the annual convention. Weekend events consisted of bonding activities between schools, leadership workshops, guest speaker presentations and a session with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). In the session with the VDOE, student leaders had the opportunity to give their feedback on topics ranging from SOL testing to teacher support and online courses.
