Volleyball Round-up: Briar Woods, Broad Run, Dominion and County All Sweep to Dulles District Wins; Beckham Leads SB Sweep Over Herndon in Northern Region

(Sept. 8, 2010) - The first day of school in Loudoun saw almost all the volleyball teams in action and all four games in the Dulles District were sweeps with Briar Woods, Broad Run, Dominion and Loudoun County all winning.

Stone Bridge, ranked No. 1 in the LoCo Elite 5 poll, cruised to a sweep over Herndon in Northern Region non-district play with senior Christine Beckham putting on a 16-kill display with Navy coach Mike Schwob and assistant coach Mary Clare Couglan in the stands to watch the Bulldog.

Beckham has been on the Navy's recruiting radar since the spring and could potentially play as a setter and all around the horn defender for the service academy as she does for her Virginia Elite club team. Beckham is currently a "candidate" and going through all of the processes to get into the academy. Since her unofficial visit to Navy last February that has been her school of choice and she has thus far turned NCAA Division I offers to focus on Navy. Next month she will make her official visit to the school, attending a volleyball match and home football game.

Navy had to like what they saw Tuesday as Beckham was nearly flawless finishing with five service points, one ace and eight digs to go with the 16 kills.

Stone Bridge def. Herndon, 25-12, 25-18, 25-19
The Skinny: Bulldog Amanda Miller was again running the offense with 29 assists. Ryan Ackermann added nine kills, nine service points, three aces and six digs while Amy Christensen had 16 digs and seven service points. Also for SB, Mariah Brantley was hot with the service with 18 points including three aces and she had six digs. Delaney Schulte finished with four kills.

Briar Woods def. Woodgrove, 25-14, 25-14, 25-17
The Skinny: Natalie Deffer led the Falcons with 10 service points and Keandra McCardell was the BWoods leader in blocks and kills with seven apiece. The Falcons defense was led by Shelby Harris. Chelsea Kaser also had an outstanding match for BWoods.

Broad Run def. Tuscarora, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22
The Skinny: Emily Sears led the Spartans with nine kills, 12 aces and six digs. Jess Federsen had six kills for BR and nine digs while Kate Sims added five kills. Brenna Sullivan had seven digs for the Spartans and setter Molly Maloney racked up 22 assists in just two games.

Huskies were led defensively by Amirah Al-Bayyinah with five single blocks and three double blocks. Libero Keili Terry added to the defense with six digs.

Dominion def. Park View, 25-6, 25-12, 25-15

Loudoun County def. Freedom, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19
The Skinny: The Raiders improved to 3-0 (3-0) with a 3-0 sweep in a hard fought match against the much improved Freedom Eagles. Loudoun County was led by Colleen Bowlds (18 assists, 8 points, 2 kills, 2 digs, 1 block), Rachel Roberts (7 kills, 5 blocks), Jenna Strange (5 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces), Taylor Huewe (4 kills), Danielle Cullen (2 kills, 11 points, 1 block), Katrina Kirby (2 kills, 2 blocks), Georgi Fox (4 digs, 2 blocks, 1 kill), Gabby Serafin (14 digs, 5 points, 1 kill, 1 ace), Kathleen Horvath (7 digs, 11 points, 2 kills, 2 aces), Megan Fox (8 assists, 1 ace), Jordan Leiter (3 assists, 3 points, 2 aces), Sammy Dormio (2 digs). Loudoun County returns to action this Saturday as they host the Cheers Sports Classic versus Stone Bridge, Kettle Run, and Sherando.

The Raider JV (25-17, 25-14) and Freshmen (25-5, 25-9) also swept their way to victory over the Eagles to improve to 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. They return to action next Tuesday as they host Tuscarora.
