Boys Soccer: South Riding Native Patrick Foss Joins United States U-17 Side

(Sept. 30, 2010) - Following success in the 2010 SUM Cup in Houston on July 29, D.C. United Academy midfielder Patrick Foss has been called into the United States U-17 Residency team in Bradenton, Fla. Foss, a South Riding native, is a member of United’s U-16 Academy side, and he has been named to a list of 40 players who will be part of the Residency Program under the instruction of U-17 National Team Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera.

His brother, Mike Foss, is a redshirt junior on the George Mason University soccer team.


Following his fall stay with the U.S. U-17’s, Foss will be eligible to compete in next year’s CONCACAF U-17 Championship and the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico. Foss helped D.C. United’s Academy capture its third SUM Cup title in four years after defeating Real Salt Lake’s U-17 side on penalty kicks in July. In a year that Academy products Andy Najar and Bill Hamid have directly impacted the club’s first team, United’s youth movement gained additional momentum in Houston, as the Black-and-Red retained this League-wide competition.

Beginning in 1999, the U.S. Residency Program has given players an opportunity to grow and move up the ladder in the world of soccer and become professionals in MLS, some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and the U.S. Men's National Team. Since its inception, more than 300 players have been through the full-time Residency Program, and more than 100 of those players have moved on to Major League Soccer or professional leagues abroad. Nineteen players have also registered at least one cap with the senior National side, including current United midfielder Santino Quaranta.
